Introduction by Evil Resident:
The Resident Evil/Biohazard series is home to hundreds of different monsters, created by a vast assortment of mutagens. Virus Analysis is my attempt to categorize and explain all of them.
My primary passion as a fan has always been for the monsters, and the mythology behind them. So, I created a write up on the t-Phobos Virus one day after a play through of Revelations 2, a sort of spiritual successor to an analysis on the Mold I made shortly before. I choose the name “Virus Analysis” on the spot, which is probably evident in how generic it sounds. I had fun with it and so decided to afterwards analyze Uroboros, another virus featured in Revelations 2. Pretty soon I had created a series covering everything in the series. Or almost everything – I plan on continuing to gather information and create new articles.
Virus Analysis was largely inspired by the wonderful "Biology of Evil". However, while Biology sought to explain the viruses and monsters of Resident Evil with real-life scientific principles, Virus Analysis instead aims to explain these elements using the fantasy science portrayed in the games and other media. It is a collection of official information, along with conjecture formed from observations. Primarily, Virus Analysis “connects the dots”, so to speak, and explains phenomenon by comparing it to established facts and principles.
For example, Wesker’s Report II establishes that the reactivation of the virus in response to damage (V-ACT) is an innate attribute of Progenitor-based viruses, and Inside of Biohazard: The Darkside Chronicles suggests G mutations are related to the V-ACT seen in Crimson Heads. Using this as a precedence, many other similar situations can be linked to V-ACT, like Wesker only becoming super human after his death at the hands of the Tyrant.
Virus Analysis uses many theories alongside canon information, but these are always marked with “it could be”, “it's possible”, “maybe”, and other quantifiers that should create a distinction. It is an ever-evolving work, and will be constantly updated as new information becomes available. Some information may be proven false as new sources come to light, and I will strive to make corrections and keep the editorials as accurate as possible. Some editorials also cover material and subjects that may not be considered relevant to the main Resident Evil canon established by CAPCOM, but rather exist in their own universes.
I hope Virus Analysis brings you a greater appreciation for how complex, well thought out, and creative Resident Evil can be. Enjoy!
Special Thanks:
I’d like to thank some people who made this possible:
Yama and those at Biohaze for having me and serving as a launching platform for Virus Analysis.
Project Umbrella and Crimson Head Elder for the amazing translations and interviews without which my understanding of lore would be limited to what is officially available in English.
News Bot, Nóra, CVXfreak, Welsh, Rodney S. Holbrook/USS Command, Dr Wunderbar, TheBatman, and Agent Red Jackal for providing other translations or rare info.
Everyone who supported me along the way.
And very special thanks to Reenbean for her wonderful editing of images/textures, banner creation and making the article look fantastic. And to BSAArklay, for having me on this great site, providing the vast majority of pictures (including all the ripped textures), translations, and putting everything together so well.
