INTRODUCTION (p.002)
The Arklay Mountains in the outskirts of Raccoon City located in the midwestern United States.
Recently there have been a number of bizarre murders where people have been eaten alive.
The Raccoon Police Department, taking the situation very seriously, decides to send in the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team, a special forces unit who rushes to the site, but the helicopter carrying the group experiences mysterious engine trouble in the forest near the site and crashes...
Although Bravo Team succeeded in escaping, they lost all their equipment.
What they witness is a wrecked military prisoner convoy and slaughtered MPs.
S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team leader Enrico Marini instructs his men to track down ex-Marine Billy Coen, who's believed to have escaped from the convoy, then they set out to resolve the situation.
...At this point, no one expected the incident would eventually develop into a catastrophe that would engulf all of Raccoon...

B.O.W. CREATURES
Zombie (p.023)
A human whose genetic structure has been altered due to t-Virus infection, turning them into a monster. Zombies come in a variety of outfits, such as researchers and soldiers, and each individual has slightly different strength.
Cerberus (p.024)
A combat-ready biological weapon (B.O.W.) created in a t-Virus administration experiment based on a military dog. It has ferocious aggression that allows it to attack prey in a single bound and sink its teeth into their throats.
Humanoid Leech (p.025)
The Leeches can gather and mimic Director Marcus. When they're engaged in mimicry, their movements are slow, but when they break the mimicry and become "humanoid leeches," they attack with their arms twisted like whips, so you'll need to keep your distance.
Stinger (p.026)
A giant scorpion that enlarged as a result of the t-Virus, it's 3m long (torso only; even larger if the tail's extended), 1m wide (torso only; not including scissors), and 1m tall. The scorpion's scissors are so sharp and large they can make huge holes in the train's roof. Also, its outer shell's extremely hardened due to the virus' influence.
Leech (p.027)
A giant leech about 20cm long. It was created as a result of Director Marcus' repeated experiments on them as a research subject. They obey the commands of the Queen Leech.
Crow
A crow that was indirectly infected by pecking at dead flesh infected with the t-Virus. They move in groups and attack with their sharp beaks.
Plague Crawler (p.028)
An insect-type B.O.W. created through repeated DNA manipulation using the t-Virus, based on various different insects. It attacks prey with its sickle-like limbs. It prefers dark and damp areas such as in an attic, and when prey approaches, they can suddenly descend and attack. It was being developed as an early B.O.W., but research was halted due to the fatal flaw of its intelligence not being developed enough to carry out orders as a weapon.
Centurion (p.029)
A centipede that grew to a huge size due to secondary infection with the t-Virus. It seems the centipede preyed on insects, rats, and spiders that were also secondarily infected. It seems the t-Virus has had a stronger effect on the centipede, and it's still growing. At this point only one of them has been confirmed alive, but it's already over 10m long. The sheer size of this creature's astonishing.
Giant Spider (p.030)
A spider that has grown tremendously after being infected with the t-Virus. It can move through special paths such as walls and ceilings, capable of invading various places.
Eliminator (p.031)
A monkey-type B.O.W. created as part of Marcus' research. Its skin's torn due to abnormal muscle development. It uses astonishing three-dimensional attacks using walls and ceilings, taking advantage of its athletic ability. In addition, they often attack in groups with agile movements.
Hunter (p.032)
A B.O.W. created by adding other genetic information to a human whose genetic structure was altered via administration of the t-Virus. The codename "hunter" expresses how agilely it moves and how accurately it reaps the life of its prey. Intelligent enough to understand and carry out simple commands, it's one of the most successful B.O.W. experiments.
Infected Bat (p.033)
A giant bat more than 3m in length with its wings spread out, its muscles and skeleton developing and changing abnormally due to the effects of the t-Virus.
Proto Tyrant (p.034)
The "prototype" predecessor to the Tyrant. Its entire body's on the verge of decay due to the influence of the t-Virus being too strong. It looks very similar to the Tyrant, but as a B.O.W., its thought control's unstable and it was too violent, so it was disposed of.
Lurker (p.035)
A frog that has grown massive due to administration of the t-Virus. It was created in the process of experiments on amphibians. It has an abnormally developed tongue and tries to prey on anything that moves in front of it. However, its eyes have degenerated due to the virus' effects, so it appears to use other sensory organs to identify its prey.
Queen Leech First Form (p.036)
The Queen Leech is the creator of the leeches that attacked the train and covered the training school and laboratory. What sort of will and structure it has formed is entirely shrouded in mystery.
Queen Leech Second Form (p.037)
The first form has now grown even larger. Its body has grown to an enormous size and there's no trace of its former appearance. Despite its huge size, it attacks with unrestrained movements.

S.T.A.R.S. (p.194)
The following's a summary of the atrocious crimes committed in the outskirts of midwestern Raccoon City and the origins of the spec ops unit S.T.A.R.S. deployed to solve the crimes.
A SPEC OPS UNIT FORMED WITH PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTMENT
S.T.A.R.S. was formed under the jurisdiction of the Raccoon Police Department (aka R.P.D.) to respond to urban terrorism and diversifying special crimes, which have been on the rise in recent years. S.T.A.R.S., meaning "Special Tactics and Rescue Service," consists of two teams, Alpha and Bravo, comprised of 12 experts in various fields regardless of gender or background. It was founded in 1996 and funded by local private companies as part of an urban planning project, led by the giant Umbrella Corporation. It was established in 1996, almost as if they had anticipated the probable events that could happen there.
DETAILS OF POSITIONS WITHIN S.T.A.R.S.
LDR (LEADER): The leader decides the tactics and mobilizes the troops.
PM (POINT MAN): A point man scouts and secures positions.
BUM (BACKUP MAN): A backup man mainly supports PM.
OM (OMNI MAN): An omni man carries equipment and is in charge of heavy weapons.
RS (REAR SECURITY): Rear security provides rear guard and protection.
RACCOON CITY, ARKLAY MOUNTAINS, INCIDENT DETAILS
May 10th - An originally Umbrella-dedicated industrial waste disposal site's overwhelmed by the amount of waste being dumped and untreated contaminants leak out.
May 11th - A massive virus outbreak occurs at the Arklay Laboratory, which is ostensibly an Umbrella recreational facility.
May 27th - A local newspaper reports the found body of a woman with marks looking like she'd been bitten by a fierce beast. Since then, various bizarre murder cases frequently occur.
July 9th - Many people are lost or go missing in the Arklay Mountains. S.T.A.R.S. is sent in to investigate the truth.
July 14th - An investigation team's formed within Umbrella to search the shuttered former executive training school for a replacement for the Arklay Laboratory.
July 23rd - Bravo Team departs by helicopter for the Umbrella recreation facility, also known as the mansion. However, the helicopter crash lands in the mountains due to engine trouble.
A BIOHAZARD OUTBREAK AND THE BEGINNING OF A TRAGEDY
A biohazard occurred among the facility's staff and surrounding wildlife due to the leaking of contaminants in early May and a virus outbreak in the laboratory. The effects of the virus infection gradually took their toll on the Arklay Mountains, resulting in a number of freak murders. However, Umbrella hid this fact from the public. Response was delayed as a result, leading to significant sacrifices. The city's police force has no choice but to take action, at great cost. Two months later, two weeks after the accident, on Bravo Team was dispatched on July 23rd. This was the first job for Rebecca Chambers, who had just enlisted.

Umbrella (p.196-197)
What is Umbrella, the company that caused the biohazard that started it all? This story takes a closer look at the truth behind the huge organization.
A POWER TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD BORN OF PROGENITOR'S DISCOVERY
Umbrella maintains the face of a huge pharmaceutical company well known internationally for its corporate name and symbol, representing an "umbrella" and expressing the desire to "protect people's health." Headquartered in Europe, it has branches all over the world, one of which is in Raccoon City. The construction of a factory in what used to be a small town in the middle of nowhere in the U.S., along with the provision of a massive amount of financial aid, has led to the city's rapid growth and the number of employees increases year by year, with now about 30% of its population involved with them.
However, the reality's that it's a deadly corporation developing and selling bioweapons utilizing viruses. Oswell E. Spencer, along with his classmate James Marcus and Spencer's aristocratic friend Edward Ashford, discovered the "Progenitor" virus which recombines the genes of living organisms. The following year, in 1968, Umbrella was established as a disguise to the world in order to promote its research and develop bioweapons.
UMBRELLA CORP.-OPERATED TRAIN
Railroads connect Umbrella's facilities scattered throughout the country. The train headed for the site of the former executive training school was a five-car train equipped with different grades of cars as well as a dining car, suggesting high-ranking personnel were also on board.
THE SITE OF THE CLOSED EXECUTIVE TRAINING SCHOOL
In the year of the Umbrella Corporation's founding, a training school was opened with James Marcus as its director, as an institution to nurture talented people regardless of age, race, or nationality. It's now closed.
DR. MARCUS' LAB HIDDEN INSIDE THE EXECUTIVE TRAINING SCHOOL
Even though he was appointed director of the training school, Marcus wasn't interested in people, instead devoting himself to studying Progenitor. He set up a room with his own equipment deep in the chapel's basement, ruthlessly treating prospective employees as guinea pigs when animal experiments began exhibiting limitations. Even though it's been 20 years since it was shut down, traces of its madness are still evident.
STRUGGLE FOR CONTROL OVER THE "PROGENITOR" VIRUS
Albert Wesker
He was assigned to the training school as a cadet. As an excellent and practical person, the director valued him. However, under Spencer's orders, he betrayed the director and killed him. He was transferred with the results of his research.
William Birkin
He was assigned as an executive candidate at the same time as Wesker. He appears only interested in whatever documents are in his hands, but he's one of Umbrella's top minds. He takes over the research results taken from Marcus, displaying his true potential.
B.O.W. DEVELOPMENT AT THE ARKLAY LABORATORY
Although he had left it to Marcus, Spencer was also conducting his own research on Progenitor in a mansion in the Arklay Mountains. In 1978, his research added the stolen "t" and the abilities of Birkin, who rose to the position of chief, and began to accelerate the process of commercialization.
B.O.W. DEVELOPMENT IN THE EXECUTIVE TRAINING SCHOOL
Marcus was a member of the team that discovered Progenitor and continued to be entrusted with its research, but conflict arose between him and Spencer, who was business-centric and saw Progenitor as a profit-making tool. After several B.O.W.'s, Marcus finally succeeds with "t", but...

After several B.O.W.'s, Marcus finally succeeds with "t", but...
t-Virus (p.198-199)
-PROGRESS TOWARDS PRACTICAL USE-
"t" virus is the general term for variant strains of the "Progenitor" virus developed for putting Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W.) to practical use, which has been Umbrella's goal since its inception.
REPEATED BIO-EXPERIMENTS BIRTHING MONSTERS
Incorporating other genes into the Progenitor virus causes it to mutate, and then by administering the altered virus to some organism, it'll enhance the host's characteristics and make it a practical military weapon. This project was called the "t-Project" and its ultimate goal was to develop a humanoid combat B.O.W. with superior intelligence. "t" is an acronym for "Tyrant," and it's clear this is a codename that matches the goal.
FROM PROGENITOR'S DISCOVERY TO NOW
19XX - Spencer, Ashford, and Marcus discover the Progenitor virus which recombines the genetic makeup of living organisms.
1968 - Umbrella's established with Spencer as its founder. Marcus is assigned director of the training school, but he's also immersed into researching the Progenitor virus.
September 1977 - As a result of Marcus's work, a new virus combined with leech DNA stands out as the first "t" strain of Progenitor.
June 1978 - Practical experiments on leeches, begun by Marcus in February, recorded amazing results. Then, on June 3, they begin mimicking humans in groups.
1978 - Further development of the successful "t" is moved to the Arklay Laboratory with Wesker, an executive candidate, and a young Birkin, who's selected as chief researcher.
STRAIN IMPROVEMENTS BY DR. MARCUS
THE FIRST "LEECH"
The process of improving it was arduous, but combining it with leeches provided a breakthrough. The leeches instinctively repeated parasitism, predation, and reproduction for survival, thought to be ideal features for a B.O.W. Marcus stayed in his room and continued his research with unusual affection. As expected, the result was that the leeches exhibited a fearsome capacity for learning, growing from individual to group behavior and even mimicking humans.
B.O.W. EXPERIMENT "MAMMALIAN"
As a result of incorporating the t-Virus into monkey cells and applying them to fertilized monkey eggs, the individuals that were born displayed increased aggression and slight development of intelligence. Their agile movements and group assaults were concluded to be amazing, but inadequate for an ideal B.O.W.
OTHER STRAIN IMPROVEMENTS AT THE TRAINING SCHOOL
B.O.W. EXPERIMENT "AMPHIBIAN"
As a result of administering the t-Virus to frogs, their jumping ability and tongue were unusually developed, but their eyes degenerated. They use some sort of sensory organ to prey on anything that moves in front of them. However, as with insects, there was no change in intelligence, so development was discontinued.
B.O.W. EXPERIMENT "INSECT"
The "t" virus was administered to various insects and their DNA was manipulated, but although changes such as increased size and aggression could be observed, there was fatally no development of intelligence for it to be a B.O.W. and the research was scrapped early on.
B.O.W. EXPERIMENTS IN THE ARKLAY LABORATORY
Based on the first strain, research progressed under Birkin and in 1981, by incorporating the genetic information of other organisms to humans genetically manipulated with "t", they created the Hunter, with astounding instantaneous power and the intelligence to understand simple commands. In 1988, the B.O.W. Tyrant was developed for the third stage, more advanced combat. In 1988, development of a more advanced combat B.O.W., Tyrant, began. Additionally, it was actively administered to crustaceans, making it only a matter of time before yielding practical applications as weapons.
MUTANTS CAUSED BY A BIOHAZARD
"t" invades and alters all ecosystems as a result of secondary infection, causing rats, insects, plants, etc., and the organisms that prey on them to become aggressive after feeding on dead flesh contaminated by "t."
