THE FIRST NIGHT - OMEN OF TRAGEDY
1. ARKLAY MOUNTAINS - AMONG THE MOUNTAINS (DAY)
(SE) Murmuring of a stream. Chirping of small birds. Jane (17) and her mother Anita (40) climb the mountain.
Jane: Come on, Mom, hurry up.
Anita: Wait Jane. You walk so fast.
Jane: It feels good. Look Mom! There's a mist wrapped around the mountains, it's very beautiful.
Anita: Yes, you can't take away its beauty. It's been a while since I visited the Arklay Mountains.
Jane: Dad should've come too.
Anita: Let the man have a rest on a rare day off, he needs to sleep. He's exhausted from work!
Jane: Yeah, he couldn't wake up because of a hangover. I was constantly teased at the school with "daughter of an alcoholic"! Why does he behave like this?
Anita (trying to change the subject): Let me catch my breath... You know what, why don't we look for the healing herbs?
Jane: What healing herbs?
Anita: Perennial herbs grow somewhere here, they're from the same family as celery. Apparently they're quite useful. Stop here, we'll chop them into a salad and feed your papa to help his hangover.
Jane: Uh-huh! A-ah-ah! (an echo is audible)
(SE) Mom and daughter laugh. The wind rushes, a strong rustle of trees is heard. It begins to rain.
Jane: It's raining, we should head back. Let's go to the car.
Anita: Come on.
(SE) You can hear the sound of running. The rain suddenly increases rapidly, there is a rumble of thunder.
Jane: A-ah!
Anita: Are you okay, Jane? Look under your feet!
Jane: That's strange. The road's not the same. Are we lost?
Anita: Don't panic. Let's look for somewhere we can wait out the rain... Look, there's some kind of house. Let's go faster!
(SE) The sound of thunder.
2. RUINS OF AN EXPLODED MANSION
(SE) Mom and daughter run into a dilapidated mansion.
Anita: We can wait here. We're soaked to the bone. We should dry off.
Jane: Mom, this is...
(SE) The doors of a broken window clatter against the frame with each gust of wind.
Jane: Is this the place where that incident happened last month?
Anita: What?
Jane: Yea, it is. A month ago there was an explosion.
(SE) Jane paces, from under her feet we can hear the scraping of broken glass.
Jane: (from a distance) And this is probably the dining room. A hefty clock's broken on the floor. Oh, there's a fireplace!
Anita: Jane!
Jane: This is the same place the Raccoon Police S.T.A.R.S. unit came, some monsters attacked and tore them to pieces.
Anita: All these stories about "monsters" - just rumors!
Jane: The survivors were named Chris and Jill, they left Raccoon City soon after. This building belonged to the pharmaceutical company "Umbrella", I wouldn't be surprised if they conducted some terrible experiments here.
Anita: Stop it, Jane! The city's full of people who work for Umbrella. Your dad, if you haven't forgot, transports their products.
(SE) Suddenly they hear the sound of breaking glass.
Jane: Ah-AH!
Anita: Calm down! It's just the wind knocking out the glass.
(SE) The storm subsides, it stops raining. Slowly the night begins to set in. Cicadas rattled, dogs could be heard howling from afar.
Anita: It looks like the rain's over. It got dark so quickly. Well, we should head back now.
(SE) Suddenly, soft steps are heard.
Jane: What's that... that sound?
Anita: Huh?
Jane: It's like a dog walking.
Jane: And again, shh, shhh.
Jane: (in horror) It's coming toward us…
Anita: Let's move quickly.
(SE) The two don't hesitate to turn around, as the crashing of breaking glass rings out, the growl of a "Cerberus" comes from behind them.
Both: AHHH!
(SE) With a great roar the animal throws itself at Anita and brings her down to the ground.
Jane: MOM!
Anita: (trying to fight) Run, Jane!
Jane: No! Stop! GET UP!
(SE) Again glass crashes, a second and then a third "Cerberus" jump through the window. All Jane can hear now are her mother's screams.
Anita: RUN!
Jane: Mom!
(SE) Jane's steps as she runs are heard. One of the Cerberus chases after her.
IN THE FOREST
(SE) The woods are pitch black. Out of breath, Jane sprints without considering her exhaustion. Following behind her is the "Cerberus." The girl's wobbly legs of the girl barely hold her up, and on a slope she slips and flops to the ground.
Jane: (trying to crawl) Mom... Mom...
(SE) From somewhere far away, Anita's shrill cries can still be heard.
Anita: A-ah-AHH!
(SE) After this, the Cerberus let out a victorious howl.
Jane: MOM!
(SE) The girl's desperate cries are carried far beyond the mountain slopes.
A RESTAURANT
(SE) People chatter. A cash register closes.
Jane: Thank you for visiting. We hope to see you again.
(SE) A doorbell jingles as the door swings open, and a classmate of Jane's named Jim (17) enters the restaurant.
Jane: Oh, Jim!
Jim: Hey, Jane! Should we eat here?
Jane: Uh-huh. What'll it be?
Jim: Let me think ... Coffee and a hamburger.
Jane: One hamburger!
Jim: It's been a month already. Time flies in this town….
Jane: (looking down)...
Jim: Where'd she go? I heard that the police only found a bit of clothing and the incident was written off as hungry wolves.
Jane: Don't say that.
Jim: Something's not right. First the incident in the mansion with S.T.A.R.S. with all those deaths, and now this. They haven't investigated any of it.
Jane: Jim...
Jim: Sorry, is it too soon? Let's change the subject... how's your dad?
Jane: Well... since Mom died, he's gotten even more screwed up. He's more distant than before.
Jim: What can I say, hopefully time will help heal him...
AT JANE'S HOUSE
(SE) Cicadas rattle, an owl hoots, rock music plays from the car window. The car slows to a halt. The car door opens.
Jane: Thank you. Well then, I'll see you tomorrow at school.
Jim: Yeah. You try not to worry. We can talk tomorrow.
(SE) The car drives off.
Jane: I'm home.
(SE) The girl opens the front door.
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) There is light snoring and a quiz on TV. On the couch lies Jane's father, Nick (45).
Jane: Dad, asleep on the couch again...
(SE) Jane turns off the TV and accidentally kicks an empty bottle, there are many more scattered on the floor. The bottle rolls to the corner with a clatter.
Jane: Such a mess in here... Get up, Dad. How many times did she say, don't sleep on the couch - you'll catch a cold. Go upstairs to your bed. Dad!
Nick: (rubbing his eyes) Is that Jane, help your father up.
Jane: Can't you get up yourself?
(SE) Grabbing his daughter's shoulders, Nick climbs up and starts walking, but his legs tangle and he falls to the floor with a crash.
Jane: Jeez, sober up! Every time it's the same thing!
Nick: Sorry... I'm a bad father. I'm not fit for anything (mutters something inaudible)
(SE) With the help of his daughter, Nick manages to climb the stairs.
JANE'S HOUSE, FIRST FLOOR, KITCHEN
(SE) Birds singing outside the window. The clock strikes nine o'clock. Jane washes dishes, then cleans the sink.
Jane: Mom...
(SE) Suddenly, the door leading from the kitchen to the garden begins to rattle.
Jane: (scared) Who's that? Is there someone out there?
(SE) The wind subsides ominously. Jane timidly approaches the door and slowly opens it with a violent creak... At first the silence is broken by a deaf growl, in the next instant the dog with a bloodthirsty growl pounces on the girl.
Jane: Ouch!
(SE) However, after a second a whistle is heard.
Norman: Come on, Samson!
(SE) 55 year old neighbor Norman runs up to the house.
Norman: Sit, Samson, sit! Are you okay, Jane?
(SE) The German Shepherd obeys the owner and guiltily whimpers.
Jane: Uncle Norman... And Samson, you almost gave me a heart attack.
Norman: I was taking him out and he was barking for no reason at all, he tore off his leash. He's behaving very strangely lately.
Jane: Strange how?
Norman: He seems frightened over everything... And what about you, how are you coping?
Jane: I'm not, really.
Norman: Well we got things going on right now too. Grandpa Ben's hens disappeared. Listen, there's something going on around here, especially in the outskirts of town, so lock your doors and keep the house secure. Come on, Samson.
(SE) Norman leaves with Samson, who growls as they leave. Jane returns to the house and tightly closes the back door.

THE FIRST NIGHT - THE MANSION BECKONS
8. RACCOON CITY HIGH SCHOOL (NOON)
(SE) With a bell marking the end of class, crowds of students pour out of the classrooms and the usual chaos in the halls ensues. Jane and Jim leave together.
Jim: You say the dog was behaving strangely?
Jane: Yes. It seemed awfully unsettled.
(SE) Two classmates approach.
First Student: Hey, Jane, they say your mom was attacked in that mansion. Was it a Zombie?
Jane: Shut up. Enough of the bullshit.
First Student: I have a friend whose dad works for the police, and he says there are monsters there, even Zombies. They're the same creatures that devoured S.T.A.R.S.
Second Student: I also heard that if you're bitten by a Zombie, you'll become one yourself. So, your mom's now...
First Student: Yeah, she became a Zombie, uhhhh...
Jane: Shut up, shut up!
(SE) Annoyed, Jim takes the student by the collar and slams him against the lockers.
Jim: Shut the hell up!
First Student: Hey you idiot, let go!
Jim: Apologize! Apologize, now! Jane's mom did not become a monster, you understand?
First Student: What's your problem, Jim? Oh, yea, you're in love with Jane!
Jim: What?
Jane: Stop it!
(SE) Jane runs away.
Jim: Jane!
OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL
(SE) Jane jumps out into the road. An oncoming car slams on its brakes as it screeches to stop.
Driver: Are you crazy or what? Open your eyes!
(SE) The car leaves.
Jim: Jane! (runs over) What're you worried about? They're two morons.
Jane: What if it's true? What if, these "monsters" attacked my mother?
Jim: You were there too!
Jane: It's just that they weren't ordinary wolves. Their skin was peeled and hanging, I could see all their insides, and their eyes were bright red.
Jim: Don't be silly! There are no "monsters" in our world!
Jane: But...
Jim: Look we'll go and see for ourselves.
Jane: Huh?
Jim: Let's go to this mansion and see what kind of "monsters" there are.
Jane: No, we're not going anywhere near there!
Jim: You don't want to? If you don't want to, then I'll go alone.
ON THE ROAD
(SE) The two are driving in the car.
Jane: Are we really going there? And what if it's true there are some monsters?
Jim: I HAVE THIS! Look what I have!
Jane: A gun?! Where did you get a weapon?!
Jim: It's my dad's, I borrowed it.
Jane: It's extremely dangerous!
Jim: Don't worry!
ARKLAY MOUNTAINS
(SE0 Some unknown birds can be heard singing. Pulling back the thickets, Jane and Jim make their way along the slope.
Jane: It's already getting dark. Let's go back, Jim.
Jim: A little farther... Ah, there, over there!
RUINED MANSION
(SE) Jane and Jim step on the broken glass and crumbling debris.
Jim: Hey! Is anybody here? Monsters! Zombies! Answer me!
(SE0 Jim's calls echo through the crumbling corridors, but the wind is his only response.
Jim: Well, look, there's no one here.
(SE) The wind howls.
Jane: (worried) It's completely dark. Let's go back, Jim.
Jim: Don't be afraid. Where was your mother attacked?
Jane: I don't remember, it was dark.
(SE) The pair continue on when suddenly the floor begins to crack with a crash.
Jim: A-ah-ah!
Jane: Jim! (with an echo)
Jim: (with an echo) Oh-oh-oh... Crap, the floor gave way, I fell.
Jane: Are you all right? Can you get out?
Jim: There's a ladder here. Apparently, this is some underground passage. It goes further. I'll go and see what's there.
Jane: Don't you dare! Get up here fast! (no answer)
Jane: (with fear) Jim... Jim!
(SE) Then the boy's cries reach the girl's ears. BANG! ... BANG! – Several gunshots ring out.
Jane: Jim!
(SE) Jim comes running throws himself at the ladder, breathing heavily.
Jane: What happened, Jim?
Jim: There... there was something. I dunno what... crazy noises.
Jane: Really...
Jim: Ah-ha-ha-ha! No, I'm joking! There's nothing there, ah-ha-ha-ha!
Jane: You moron.
Jim: Well, I'm sorry. But hey, no Zombies or monsters. We can head back now.
(SE) The duo is heading back. But suddenly Jim stops.
Jane: What is it, Jim?
Jim: You hear something?
Jane: Something? I won't fall for that a second time.
Jim: No, now I'm serious. Very...
(SE) In the stillness there is a sound like someone dragging their feet.
Jim: What's that sound? Shhh, there.
Jane: (in horror) It's coming...
(SE) Something begins to grunt heavily, it gets closer and closer.
Jim: Get to the car! Run!
(SE) They both begin to sprint.
IN THE WOODS
(SE) They reach the car, open the doors and dive in. Jim tries to start the car, but - the engine does not start.
Jane: What is it, Jim? Are we out of gas!?
Jim: It won't start!
(SE) Bushes begin crackling and twigs begin to snap, the groans of a man can be heard...
Jane: (breaking into a cry) Jim! Look there! To the right of the car...
(SE) The sickly groans continue... The man gets closer.
Jim: What is... is that a man? No... His face is all torn, I can see his bones!
Jane: The skin on his arm is dangling... It's coming this way! Get the car moving!
(SE) But the engine does not want to work.
Jim: Come on, don't do this to me!
(SE) BANG! BANG!
Jim: What's wrong with him! I shot him so many times, but he got up again!
Jane: Jim!
Jim: Let's go!
(SE) Suddenly groans begin to echo all around them... a crowd of Zombies approach. BANG!
Jim: Quick, run!
Jane: Jim!
(SE) The door opens, they both run away. The groaning is right behind them.
Jim: What kind of freaks are these?!
(SE) BANG!... Click-click... The gun is empty.
Jim: Shit, the mag's empty!
(SE) The pair head for thick bushes barging their way through the thicket.
Jim: That's... it's... a Zombie! It's real, they're Zombies!
(SE) Again, the sounds of dragging feet accompanied by groans are heard nearby... this time with a woman's groan.
Jim: A woman?! It can't be! It's your mom!
(SE) They hear the groaning of a crowd of Zombies, a plaintive moan and footsteps.
Jim: It can't be. Did Jane's mother survive? Or... No... YOUR MOM!
(SE) Following the cry in the middle of the forest, a plaintive female moan vibrates in the air.
THE SECOND NIGHT - CORPSE ON THE CEILING
NEAR JANE'S HOUSE
The car speeds to Jane's house and brakes sharply, Jane and Jim jump out from there.
Jane: Dad!
Jim: Nick!
They run into the house.
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
Nick: Anita? My wife was in the forest?
Jane: Jim saw her.
Jim: It was dark, but...
Nick: Bullshit! If she survived, why didn't you bring her?
Jim: Well, it's just...
Nick: What? Do you really have my Anita, my wife...
Jane: Stop it, Dad!
(SE) A gust of wind pounded at the window.
Nick: No, really. Your mother is dead. And anyway, what were you thinking taking my daughter to such a dangerous place?
Jane: Don't scold Jim. I asked for his help.
Jim: No, he's right. I behaved stupidly. Forgive me.
Nick: Eh, young people.
(SE) Nick storms out, slamming the door with force.
Jane: Dad...
ON THE CITY STREETS
(SE) The street is packed with people, scurrying cars. The townspeople gossip.
First Girl: Jim and Jane?
Second Girl: I think. They were in that old mansion and supposedly saw monsters.
First Girl: Oh, nonsense!
Guy: That mansion belongs to the company "Umbrella." If these rumours get out of hand, it won't be good for them.
CAFE-BAR, AT THE COUNTER
(SE) The busy atmosphere of the pub: casual conversations, trivial anecdotes, the ringing of glass, the knocking of billiard balls.
Nick: Hey! Again!
Bartender: How much have you drank, maybe you've had enough?
Nick: I'm drowning my sorrows, whiskey helps!
(SE) The boss approaches the counter and Nick.
Manager: Nick.
Nick: Oh, boss!
Manager: (half-whispered) that guy is trouble.
Head: Yes, about your girl and Mark's son, this Jim, there's some lousy rumours spreading. In our city, almost half the population is on the "Umbrella" payroll, you yourself work as a courier for them.
Nick: Well.
Head: It's just the stories about that mansion, even the top of the company have been hearing them. No one wants this rubbish to spread anymore. So you, by chance, you don't believe in these tales of Zombies and monsters do you?
Nick: So what if I do!
Chief: If so, you should talk to your little girl. If this continues, something nasty might happen; we need our jobs, we don't want this to get out of hand.
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) Nick rattles the front door with a roar and staggers into the house.
Nick: Jane! Where are you? We need to talk! Jane!
(SE) He goes into the living room, falls on the sofa and passes out as he immediately begins snoring. A breeze blows through the house, windows are rattling. Outside the window is an owl, but it is interrupted by a deafening horn. A horn from a speeding car that pulls up and brakes sharply.
Jane: Dad!
Jim: Nick!
(SE) The front door opens.
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) The pair run up to Nick.
Jane: Wake up, Dad! There's trouble! Wake up!
Nick: (opens his eyes) Jane... and Jim's here. You, I need to talk to you.
Jim: All the talk can wait. Come with us.
IN FRONT OF NORMAN'S HOUSE
(SE) Trills of cicadas, an owl hooting. Two cars drive up to the house, they pull up, and three people climb out.
Nick: This is Norman's house. What are we doing here?
Jim: Look at this.
Nick: What is it?
Jane: (crying voice) It's... it's Norman's dog - Samson.
Nick: His head's torn off. His head… is over there… the horror. The belly's ripped open, and no innards. Who could've abused this animal like that?
Jim: I don't know. We spoke with Uncle Norman.
Jane: Then he just left the house. He grumbled all the time that everything around was evil.
Nick: Well, where's Norman now?
Jim: We've been calling for him but he's gone. The lights in the house don't work.
(SE) Nick walks to the door and presses the bell.
Nick: Norman! Are you home, Norman? Norman!
(SE) Nick takes hold of the handle and creaks open the door.
Nick: The door is not locked.
Jane: Norman!
Nick: Stop it! Jim, I have a Winchester and a flashlight in my car. I will go get it, you stay here!
Jim: All right.
(SE) Nick runs to his car and comes back with a gun. Then, with a distinctive sound, he cocks the gun, sending a bullet into the chamber.
Nick: Well, let's go. Be on the alert.
(SE) He opens the door, it opens with a nasty scratching noise.
NORMAN'S HOUSE, INTERIOR
(SE) Silence, only the ticking of a clock. The three of them enter the house.
Nick: Where's the light switch?
(SE) Jim finds the switch, repeatedly clicks it.
Jim: It doesn't work. Looks like the electricity's out.
Jim: Look, the window's smashed. Something strong must've crashed into it.
Jane: There's an odd smell. Like rotten meat, maybe.
(SE) CLANG! CLANG! The clock strikes off a loud metallic noise as the hour changes.
Jane: (breaking into a cry) Oh, my heart, I can't stand this!
Nick: Norman, are you home? Let's check the rooms.
(SE) A door opens with a broken creak.
Nick: Everything seems to be as usual.
Jim: There's nothing here either.
Nick: There's only the second floor left. Jane, wait here. Jim, come on.
Jim: I'm coming.
(SE) The men cautiously climb the stairs.
NORMAN'S HOUSE, SECOND FLOOR
(SE) Nick and Jim go upstairs.
Jim: Look, Nick, another window is broken. What happened here?
Nick: Let's check the rest of the room first.
(SE) With a familiar creak, the men open the door.
Nick: And there's nothing...
Jim: Hold on!
(SE) Tap… Tap... Something is dripping to the floor.
Jim: Something's dripping, do you hear?
Nick: Is it... blood?
(SE) A scuttling noise is heard... Somewhere, something is crawling.
Jim: Nick! There's something on the ceiling!
Nick: A spider?! Oh my god! Two meters! Does it have something in its mouth... that a man?
(SE) SMACK! The body falls to the floor.
Jim: He's fallen! Yes it's Norman!
Nick: Norman! He's got no eyes, he's dead.
(SE) The rustling sounds grow, the spider is coming.
Jim: Careful, Nick! The spider!
Nick: Wow!
BANG! BANG! After the shots, the spider keels over. And then Jane's cry comes running up.
Jim: Go down!
(SE) Jim immediately runs down.
NORMAN'S HOUSE, GROUND FLOOR
(SE) A winged creature enters the house with terrifying squawking and flapping its wings. Nick and Jim run into the room.
Nick: Jane!
Jane: Dad! The window, the crow flew in!
(SE) The crow flaps around the room!
Jane: Look out!
Nick: I got it!
(SE) BANG! BANG! BANG! Another giant spider enters the room and with a nasty shrill jumps to the side of the wall.
Nick: Everyone! Out!
(SE) Desperately shooting, they quickly scramble to open the door; they run out of the house and climb into the cars. With the wheels screeching as they speed away from the house.

THE SECOND NIGHT - A GHOST RESURRECTED
OUTSIDE NORMAN'S HOUSE
Sometime later. Police sirens blaze in the foreground. A crowd of onlookers has gathered.
NORMAN'S HOUSE, INTERIOR
(SE) Two policemen are investigating.
First Officer: What have we got here?
Second Officer: Everything's in order.
First Officer: Nick, did you really see Norman's body?
Nick: Why would I lie to you? It was there on the ceiling in the teeth of a spider!
Second Officer: Ha-ha-ha! What kind of spider would keep a man in its teeth? Nick, did you get drunk again yesterday?
Jane: How dare you?!
Jim: I saw it too.
First Officer: Yes, clearly, clearly. Well, there really are traces of blood, but the corpse is gone. What are we gonna do with you?
Second Officer: So, you're saying that half an hour ago you saw Norman's corpse. Then you left here, and Norman came back to life and went for a wander in the fresh air, right?
Jim: Officer!
(SE) A radio call sounds from the patrol car.
Female Voice: HQ. This is HQ. Car 3, please respond.
The first officer leaves the house and uses the walkie-talkie.
First Officer: This is Car 3, go ahead.
HQ: There is an eyewitness. He said he saw Norman about ten minutes ago. He was walking towards the sawmill.
First Officer: What?
HQ: It's dark; he says he can't be sure. But he believes it was Norman.
First Officer: Roger that. (officer ends the connection, then annoyed turns to Nick) Nick! Nick! Come here, here!
(SE) The noise of the crowd.
First Officer: Norman's alive!
Nick: It can't be.
First Officer: There's a witness who saw him near the sawmill, so he's alive. What do you say to that?
Nick: But...
First Officer: Yes, strange things are happening all over this town recently. Multiple civilians have gone missing and livestock has been mutilated. (lowers voice) Since that damn Mansion Incident, the town's on edge, so you can appreciate this sort of nonsense isn't acceptable.
Nick: ...
First Officer: Do you wanna lose your job? Don't forget you work for "Umbrella", you're a driver right? If you want to keep it that way, I'd keep your mouth shut. Okay, let's get back to the station.
(SE) With the howling of sirens, the patrol cars leave.
Jane: What's wrong, Dad? Why'd the policemen leave?
Nick: They said Norman's alive.
Jim: They said what?
Nick: Let's go home, Jane.
Jane: Hold on, Dad. What're you talking about? You saw with your own eyes how Norman was killed.
Jim: We all saw it! Are you afraid of something, Nick?
Nick: I'm not afraid of anything!
Jane: Yea that's it! What'd the policeman tell you? How'd they brainwash you?
Nick: Don't make me laugh!
Jane: Then why? What're you doing, you always do this, you run and hide, you just go climb into a den! What's wrong with you?
Nick: (trembling voice) Shut up, Jane!
Jane: No! You did the same thing when Mom died, the police didn't lift a finger to find her, and you just kept silent and did nothing. Did not you love her?
Nick: Shut up!
(SE) Nick slaps his daughter across the face.
Jim: What's wrong with you, Nick?!
(SE) Nick angrily rushes to the car and quickly leaves.
Jane: Dad!
(SE) The girl sobs sorrowfully.
ON THE ROAD
(SE) Nick's car is racing along the highway.
Nick: (to himself) I'm sorry, Jane. I was a terrible husband...
(SE) Ahead another car emerges. With the signal of the horn, the other car skids to the side, almost colliding.
Nick: But I do not believe that Norman survived. I saw his corpse myself. I must go to the sawmill and find out everything.
(SE) Nick sharply turns the wheel and with a squeak of tires on the road he changes direction.
ENTRANCE TO THE ARKLAY FOREST
(SE) The car drives up and stops. Nick exits. The forest stands silent, the stream murmurs, and owls hover.
Nick: He was seen somewhere in the area.
(SE) Walking quickly, Nick enters the sawmill. Floorboards creak under his feet.
Nick: Norman! Norman! Are you here? Answer me!
(SE) Suddenly, the sound of falling boards is heard.
Nick: (excitedly) Norman? Are you here?
(SE) But no answer follows. But the door creaks, then bats fly out with a squeak.
Nick: Argh! Why are there bats here?
(SE) Suddenly a groan can be heard in the near distance.
Nick: Who's here? Is there someone here?
(SE) BAM! – A door swings open.
Nick: Norman! What's with your face! It's rotten!
(SE) With a long groan, his barely moving feet stumble forth, he approaches.
Nick: Get back! Don't you come any closer!
(SE) Nick tries to escape, but stumbles on the scattered boards.
Nick: Zombie! It's a Zombie!
BEFORE ENTERING THE FOREST
(SE) Nick runs out of the sawmill. A murmuring stream is heard. Nick's footsteps are not the only noise as moans of zombies suddenly can be heard.
Nick: They're everywhere! They're on all sides!
(SE) Groans of the zombies approach.
Nick: Shut up! Shut up!
(SE) Nick jumps into the river, desperately scrambling, he crosses it. With deep breaths, he swallows the air. However, even here there are rustling and moaning noises. But among them one stands out – a woman's groan.
Nick: It sounds familiar...
(SE) A woman's moaning is approaching.
Nick: Hey... Is it really... Anita?!
(SE) In response, only a long groan.
Nick: It can't be! Not you too... Anita-aa!
(SE) Above the forest, Nick's heart-wrenching cry rises. In the distance there is an echoed howling of dogs.

THE THIRD NIGHT - THE EPIDEMIC OVERFLOWS
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) Morning. The birds are singing. Nick talks to Jane.
Jane: Norman became a Zombie?
Nick: I'm telling you the truth. After he was killed by the spider, he turned into a Zombie and went to the sawmill.
Jane: Wow...
Nick: But not just Norman, all the missing people also became Zombies and now wander through the woods.
Jane: I don't believe it...
Nick: Even... (stops and does not finish)
Jane: What?
Nick: No, nothing.
Jane: What now? Are you hiding something again? Speak!
Nick: No, no, it's nothing!
(SE) At the house there is a knock.
Jane: Dad!
Nick: It came from the bathroom. Wait, I'll take the weapon.
(SE)The sound of a pump-action shotgun being loaded can be heard, the father and daughter are slowly walking to the bathroom.
JANE'S HOUSE, BATHROOM
(SE) There are sounds like someone is trying to gnaw something solid.
Nick: (in a low voice) I'm opening it, Jane, get down.
(SE) -Scratch – Scratch - Nick carefully opens the door. The next moment, a swarm of rats breaks out from there with squeaks.
Jane: Ew! Rats!
Nick: When did we get rats? Get the hell out! Get out!
(SE) A pack of rodents escapes with a squeak. Then the noise of an approaching car and the honk of a horn are heard.
Jane: It's Jim!
JANE'S HOUSE, ON THE PORCH
(SE) The door opens, Jane runs out.
Jane: Good morning, Jim!
Jim: Jane...
Jane: What's wrong with you, Jim? You look unwell.
Jim: I have a fever, can I stay here?
(SE) Jim opens the car door, tries to get out, but then falls to the ground.
Jane: Hold on, Jim! Dad! Dad!
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) Nick brings the weakened boy into the house.
Nick: Stay on the couch for now.
Jane: Jim, take this medicine.
Jim: (barely breathing) Thank you...
Nick: What's wrong with him?
Jim: I was supposed to pick my dad up from work today. I left to meet him, but on the way I started feeling bad.
Nick: Mark works as the head of the supervisory board of the Arklay Dam, am I right?
Jim: Yea... He left for a week for a routine inspection. He promised to call before he returned, but there was no call, so I was worried... Plus, it's my sister's birthday tomorrow.
Nick: I see. Then I'll go in your place. You can't travel in this state.
Jim: Thank you. It just came on so sudden. My whole body itches too.
Nick: Well, I'll go. Stay here and rest.
(SE) Nick leaves. A car drives away from the house.
Jim: Oh it itches... Jane, it itches everywhere... What can I do!?
Jane: Don't scratch yourself! Now I'm spreading ointment on you.
ON THE MOUNTAIN ROAD
(SE) Nick is driving. On the radio broadcast local news.
Announcer: At the request of the townspeople over the increase in the number of rats in the city, the Raccoon City Health & Sanitation Bureau responded that this is a seasonal increase and there is no cause for concern.
(SE) Nick turns off the radio.
Nick: Jane, I'm sorry... I couldn't tell you about Anita... your mother is a Zombie...
(SE) Nick continues to drive, but suddenly brakes.
Nick: Wh-what's with that black mass?
Nick: Rats! Wow, there's so many. They're blocking the road. Are they going to the lake? God! That stench! I've gotta get to the dam.
(SE) Nick starts the car and leaves.
DAM MANAGEMENT OFFICE
(SE) Engines roar. Nick opens the front door.
Nick: Mark! There's no one. It's strange.
(SE) A TV is playing. It's a programme, "Aerobics At Home."
Nick: Even the TV's on. (Nick turns it off) Mark!
(SE) Then suddenly there is an alarming thud and squelching sounds.
Nick: What's that sound? Is it down stairs?
GROUND FLOOR
(SE) The noise of the engines is amplified. Some shrieking sounds and seemingly heavy breathing are mixed in with it.
Nick: Who's there? Who's that in the corner?
(SE) Knock-knock, squelch.
Nick: Hey, answer me!
(SE) Then something responds with a groan.
Nick: Ah! Z-zombie! And he's eating a human head!
(SE) The Zombie crunches and slurps upon the human head.
Nick: Oh god, he's chewing his eyes.
(SE) During the disgusting sounds, Nick backs away, and then in horror rushes back to the stairs and up to the top. However, more Zombies have gathered.
Nick: More creatures!
(SE) He runs wherever his eyes look. The Zombies follow him.
Nick: A-ah!
(SE) Nick stumbles on the door. He jerks and pulls at the handle, but it refuses to budge. Finally the door opens and he runs inside and slams the door behind him.
GROUND FLOOR, A ROOM
Nick: The dam workers have become Zombies too?
BANG! BANG! Shots resound.
Voice: Someone there...
Nick: Who's there? Are you a Zombie? …Mark!
(SE) Nick notices Mark. He is sitting on the ground, rested with his back against the wall.
Mark: Nick? What're you doing here? Ugh…
Nick: What happened? You're hurt real bad! Jim asked me to pick you up.
Mark: That's right...
Nick: What happened here?
Mark: (gasping) When they came here, didn't anyone notice? Hordes of rats swam into the dam.
Nick: Yeah, I saw them.
Mark: They must've been carriers of this virus.
Nick: An infection?
Mark: Someone drank some tea with the water and immediately turned into a Zombie. One attacked another, and they all became monsters.
Nick: What're you talking about? I don't understand.
Mark: If you drink the water, you'll become a Zombie. If you're bitten by a Zombie, you'll become one too. When the body begins to itch – it's too late.
Nick: To heal?
Mark: My body will start to rot first, then I become a Zombie ...
Nick: (in horror) It can't be!
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
Jim: Ah! It itches, it itches! I can't!
Jane: You can't scratch like that! Not until the rash heals!
Jim: Jane, do something! It's itching!
Jim: (with pain in his voice) Jane...
DAM, ROOM IN THE BASEMENT
Nick: The phone! Is there a telephone somewhere, Mark?
Mark: The Zombies broke the communications.
Nick: In any case, you need to get out. Zombies can break in here at any time.
Mark: There's no point. I'm a goner, I'll become a Zombie.
Nick: How do you know this?
Mark: I got this wound from a Zombie. Already everything itches, there's a fever in my head. You can't save me, I'll die here... And then... (groans) I'll come back to life and become a cursed Zombie.
Nick: Mark!
Mark: Nick, you have to let the people in the city know. You can't drink tap water. And rats carry the virus.
Nick: I got it.
Mark: And... take this gun...
(SE) Mark reloads the gun.
Mark: Kill me.
Nick: What?
Mark: I'll become a Zombie ... I'd rather die as a human. Look, I'll eat human flesh, eat your eyeballs... Kill me, don't think, shoot me in the head.
Nick: It's... I can't do this!
Mark: Please, Nick... please!
Nick: No! Stop it!
Mark: No...?
(SE) Then Mark rises sharply and throws himself out the window.
Mark: Ahhhhh!
(SE) The receding, screaming cry of a man throwing himself headfirst into the dam is heard from the window.
Nick: Mark!
(SE) Splash! - Norman's body splashes into the lake under the dam.
Nick: I can't... he jumped... (painful sighs)

THE THIRD NIGHT - ABNORMALITY!
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
Jim: Uhh... It's itching... Sarah, why you standing there, don't stare, scratch, Sarah!
Jane: Jim, it's me, Jane, not Sarah.
Jim: Sorry, Kathy.
Jane: (with excitement) Jim!
MOUNTAIN ROAD
(SE) Nick drives fast in his car.
Nick: What should I do...? If it's true, what'll become of Raccoon?
(SE) BANG! Nick sharply puts pressure on the brakes, but not in time - the body of a man flies over the windshield…
Nick: I-I've hit someone!
(SE) Nick quickly gets out of the car.
Nick: Are you okay? Hold on!
(SE) Uh-uh-uuhhhh ... the "man" rises.
Nick: Zombie! Ah!
(SE) Nick immediately jumps into the car in a hurry and starts it.
Nick: The creatures are here, too! Zombies from the dam got to the city!
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
Jim: Che-she-tsya! .. Che-she-tsya!.. Ho-chu... me-sa ...
Jane: What're you saying? Calm down!
Jim: Ah, Susan... your... nails... feels... good...
Jane: Oh, stop scratching... Ah, you tore skin off!
(SE) Then the sound of a sharp braking of Nick's car is heard. Nick, almost kicks the door off the hinges, he bursts into the house.
Jane: Dad!
Nick: How's Jim?
Jane: He's behaving strangely. I don't know what to do.
Nick: Hold on, Jim! Did you drink water today? Did you drink water from the tap this morning?
Jim: Hello, Dad, welcome back. I drank. Delicious water.
Nick: It's too late. Jane, we need to lock him in the basement.
Jane: What're you talking about?
Nick: Jim will soon become a Zombie.
Jane: What?
Nick: Just listen, we need to move him to the basement! Grab his feet!
(SE) Nick and Jane grab Jim by his arms and legs and carry him to the basement.
Jim: Dad?... Where... am I. ..
Nick: Put him down here.
Jane: Jim...
Nick: Now get out! Quick!
(SE) Nick closes the door and locks it with a key.
Nick: Listen to me, Jane. Whatever happens, do not open this door. I'm going to the city. While I was driving, I saw seven or eight Zombies walking into the city. I have to warn the people.
Jane: Dad...
Nick: Listen carefully! Until I come back, do not go out into the street, lock the house up tight. If Zombies get to the city, our house will be the first frontier. Do you understand?
(SE) Nick runs out of the house and drives off. Jane closes the door and locks it.
Jane: Dad...
RACCOON CITY, CITY CENTER
(SE) On the central street Nick is driving his car. But after a few seconds it slows down. Nick jumps out and runs up to one house and knocks on the door.
Nick: White! White!
(SE) The door opens.
White: What's your problem, Nick? Why are you out of breath?
Nick: Don't drink tap water! Zombies are coming here!
White: Zombies? What kind of nonsense is that? Are you drunk again?
(SE) The door closes.
Nick: It's true! White! (pounding at the door)
Woman's Voice: (remotely) Go away! I'm sick of your lies!
Nick: What now?!
(SE) Nick runs to another house, also knocks.
Nick: Robert! Robert! Open it, please!
(SE) But no answer follows. Nick runs to another house.
Nick: Robinson! Robinson! What's wrong with you?! Why does no one answer?
(SE) Then he sees a flock of crows in the sky.
Nick: Crows. So many of them... Jane!
(SE) Nick can't feel his feet running back to the car.
NICK IN THE CAR
(SE) Nick turns on the radio.
Announcer: And we have our next caller. Grocery Kingsley, right? How did you spend your Sunday?
Kingsley: My wife and children went on a picnic. And I watched the football with a beer. It was beautiful!
Announcer: And where did your family go?
Kingsley: To the Arklay Mountains. I said the ban on visiting Arklay was finally lifted. So now they're probably already decomposed and resting. Ha-ha-ha!
Nick: Idiots! (turns off the radio)
(SE) The asphalted road ends, the car leaves for the country road. But then he sharply brakes.
Nick: Zombies!
(SE) Multiple zombie groans. Nick turns the car and heads another direction.
Nick: They're here too... They're heading to our house! Jane!
(SE) The car breaks outside the house.
JANE'S HOUSE, OUTSIDE
Nick: Jane! Zombies are coming here, Jane!
(SE) Nick runs to the house. But behind him are familiar groans. With a long howl, a mob of zombies approach. Ravens fly with endless croaking. All these sounds are mixed into one terrible cacophony.

THE FOURTH NIGHT - LIFE OR DEATH STRUGGLE
JANE'S HOUSE, OUTSIDE
(SE) Ceaseless cawing of crows, moans of Zombies.
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) Nick and Jane look out the window.
Jane: What're we supposed to do? Our house is surrounded by Zombies from all sides.
Nick: I can't get to the car, and it's useless to run...
Jane: Come here, Dad! Come here!
Nick: Get down, Jane!
(SE) A window smashes with a crash. Before that, muffled moans are now heard clearly.
Nick: Oh, you! Hey, scum!
(SE) BANG! BANG! Thundering shots.
Nick: We need to seal up that window!
(SE) Amongst the continual groans, a knocking sound can be heard.
Jane: They're trying to break down the door!
Nick: We need to prop up the sofa!
(SE) Sparing no effort, the trapped duo moves the furniture to barricade themselves in.
Nick: The phone! Call the police! I'll lock the back door now.
(SE) Click-click, the girl dials the number.
Jane: Hello! Hello!
(SE) But the line is silent. The girl desperately presses on the reset button - but in vain.
Jane: It doesn't work, Dad! The phone's not working!
(SE) Nick comes running.
Nick: I counted ten Zombies.
(SE) Nick reloads the gun.
Nick: I don't have enough ammo.
Jane: What're we supposed to do?
Nick: We're far from the city. There's no help coming...
Jane: Dad...
Nick: Don't worry. The main thing is for you to be safe. You won't have the same fate as your mother.
Jane: Same fate? What do you mean?
Nick: No, nothing.
Jane: Don't lie! Are you... saying... Mom became a Zombie, right?
(SE) Jane cries.
Nick: Jane!
(SE) The Zombies break another window. The monsters howl and continue to try to break in.
Nick: Damn! This is my house! I won't let anyone in! Everybody go away, get out of here!
(SE) BANG! BANG!
Nick: The main thing is, don't panic, Jane! Listen, I brought you and your mother so much grief. I drowned myself with alcohol, I always ran away...
Jane: Dad...
Nick: You know, when you were very young, your mother and I lived in Detroit. I worked as a mechanic at an auto garage... Burn in Hell!... (shots) The garage was already old, and despite the fact that all the workers constantly complained about the outdated machines and the danger they presented, I didn't listen to them.
Jane: Why?
Nick: Because I was money-hungry, and the company thoughtlessly chased profit. I was afraid that if I demanded new equipment, they'd simply fire me. I was afraid, until...
Jane: Until something awful happened.
Nick: A short circuit. The fire spread very quickly, there was even an explosion. I immediately announced the evacuation, but there were those who didn't manage to escape... Yeah, go away! (shot) Someone got under the machine, someone was injured and couldn't move... They shouted "Help, Nick, save me!" Everyone asked me for help. But the fire raged, everything was covered with smoke... I was just scared ... and just ran away, leaving them.
Jane: Dad...
Nick: Only then did I report the faulty equipment. I was fired.
Jane: How come?
Nick: We couldn't live in Detroit anymore. A lot of folks died and everybody looked at us from under their brows. We couldn't stand this.
Jane: Then we moved to your mom's hometown.
Nick: But wherever we went, I couldn't forget the faces of my subordinates. "Help, Nick, save me!"... Their faces full of fear... I tried to drown them in alcohol.
Jane: Dad...
Nick: But now, Jane, I realize. I made the same mistakes again and again. Even when Anita was gone, I ran away again. But now I know. I will save you. Whatever it costs me, I will save you. This is the only thing left for me to do.
Jane: Dad...
(SE) Insects chirp, owls hoot. But a terrible knocking interrupts those peaceful sounds.
Nick: Where'd that knock come from?
Jane: From the basement. It must be Jim!
(SE) Jane runs to the basement.
Nick: Stop it! Don't you dare go down there!
(SE) Nick runs after his daughter and follows her down the stairs.
JANE'S HOUSE, IN FRONT OF THE DOOR TO THE BASEMENT
Jim: Jane... Jane...
Jane: Jim!
(SE) Jane runs over to Jim.
Jane: Are you okay?
Jim: Seems I have a fever. I'm exhausted.
Jane: I'm opening the door.
(SE) Jane unlocks the door.
Nick: Stop, Jane! (Holds the door closed) This fever he has, he will become...
Jim: Nick... will I be... a Zombie?
Nick: Jim!
Jim: I see... my face is already peeling, and rotting... I'm scared...
(SE) Jim starts to whimper.
Jane: Jim...
Jim: Why did it all turn out this way? Why did I deserve this?
Nick: Jim...
Jim: Nick, my last request is... Kill me.
Nick: What?
Jim: I don't wanna turn into a Zombie. Please, Jane, if I'm your friend, kill me.
Jane: (crying) Stop it! I won't do this... never...
Jim: Nick.
Nick: Stop talking such nonsense!
Jim: If not, just give me the gun, I'll do it. One bullet will suffice. I beg you!
Jane: Jim!
(SE) Nick opens the revolver drum, there's just one bullet.
Nick: Back away Jim. I'll throw in the revolver. There's only one bullet, like you asked.
Jane: Dad!
Jim: Thank you, Nick.
(SE) He backs away. Nick opens the door with an alarming creak and throws the revolver inside, then immediately slams it.
Nick: Pick it up, Jim.
Jim: I see.
Nick: Listen to me. Only a shot to the head will do it. If you hit another part of the body, then even if you die, you'll still become a Zombie.
Jane: How... how do you know that?
Nick: It's the only way out, Jane.
Jane: But if he doesn't die, maybe we can save him!
Jim: Goodbye, Jane... I was very happy to have a girlfriend like you.
Jane: Jim...
(SE) The girl turns away in tears.
Nick: Is there a message I should give your mom and sister?
Jane: Dad...!
Jim: So my father died too? Mom and sis, tell them to get out of the city as quickly as possible. I'll only see them in Heaven.
Jane: Enough, please, enough!
(SE) BANG! Jim's limp body falls to the floor.
Jane: JIM!
JANE'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM
(SE) Birds sing and dogs howl in the mountains. With these sounds, zombie moans have become familiar.
Nick: Let's go, Jane. This will be the last battle. We must avenge your mother and Jim. Show them what we are made off!
(SE) Glasses break, constant knocking, zombies appear from everywhere. Nick bravely shoots. Then there is a crackling of wood.
Jane: They broke the door, they're in!
Nick: Back off, Jane! Get behind me!
(SE) The Winchester shots are deafening, followed by the torturous screams of Zombies.
Nick: Come up one by one! I'll take all your heads off! Fuck you this is my house! I'll show you the way to hell!
(SE) The house is filled with gunshots and the moans of Zombies. Zombies break the back door.
Jane: They're coming from the back door!
Nick: Damn! Jane, run to the second floor!
(SE) Continuing to fire, the two run up the stairs to the second floor. But even there a window breaks and crows fly in.
Jane: Look out!
Nick: Don't stop, Jane!
JANE'S HOUSE, SECOND FLOOR, ONE OF THE ROOMS
(SE) The fugitives run into the room and slam the door behind them.
Nick: Jane, help me move the table and barricade the door.
(SE) The girl and her father move the table and prop it against the door. Zombies are constantly pounding the door. Over time, it begins to crack.
Jane: Dad! The door...
Nick: What kind of strength do they have?
(SE) Nick shoots at the Zombies who can be partly seen through the cracks.
Nick: Bring a chair from the bedroom, we have to jam the door! Faster!
Jane: On it! (runs to the next bedroom)
Nick: Faster! The Zombies are breaking through! This one's for you, eat this!
(SE) BANG! BANG! Shots continue, blasting the heads of the monsters. A small moan... There are measured steps dragging, and then - an ominous female moan.
Nick: A-Anita... Are you out there?
(SE) Suddenly, Zombie Anita reaches out to Nick, who has lost his courage, Anita bites into Nick's hand.
Nick: No! Let go! Anita!
(SE) Nick pushes Zombie Anita away violently, and she flies to the opposite wall. Then Jane comes running.
Jane: What's wrong, Dad!
Nick: It's nothing! Where is the chair? Come on!
(SE) Nick closes the door and props up the two chairs.
Nick: Ouch...
Jane: What is it? You've got blood on your hand!
Nick: I was bitten by a Zombie...
Jane: It can't be...
(SE) A window crashes again and crows come in.
Nick: Again with these fucking birds!
(SE) Nick shoots the birds, they drop to the fall with thuds.
Nick: Come on, fly now! Fly!
(SE) A few more shots, and silence comes. The only audible sounds are trills of insects and a hooting owl.
Nick: (with heavy breathing) I've killed seven, three more are out there somewhere... AH... my head!
(SE) Nick falls to the floor.
Jane: Dad! You have a fever!
Nick: Jane... I'm going to become a Zombie sooner or later, there's nothing left to do...
Jane: No, no!
Nick: Don't fret, Jane! You're already 17 years old, you're already an adult. Soon you'll choose your life's path.
Jane: (crying) But I... but I...
Nick: Mom and Jim didn't die for nothing.
Jane: Dad...
Nick: Somewhere in the corner there should be a can of gasoline. Bring it.
Jane: What're you gonna do?
Nick: Burn down the house.
Jane: What?
Nick: I'll set the house on fire and shoot the monsters, and you can escape with the distraction.
Jane: And leave you here? No, I can't!
Nick: You must survive! Do as your father orders!
Jane: But...
Nick: (kindly) Jane, you're the most valuable thing I have. And I want you to live a long, long life, for all of us.
Jane: Dad...
Nick: I love you, Jane.
(SE) The father and daughter cannot hold their back tears. But in the hallway again rustling and moaning of the advancing zombies.
Nick: They're coming! Do you understand me, Jane? First you need to set fire to the house.
(SE) The girl pours the gasoline around various spots.
Nick: I'm lighting it now!
(SE) Nick takes out a lighter and sets fire to the gasoline. The fuel abruptly flares up and in seconds sprouts high flames.
Nick: Jane, do as I say! I'll shoot, and you run!
(SE) Nick throws off the chair and opens the door. BANG! BANG! The Zombies fall to the side.
Nick: That's one!
(SE) BANG! BANG!
Nick: Two! Now! Run!
Jane: Dad!
Nick: Now!
(SE) Jane quickly descends the stairs.
Nick: Jane... You gotta live a long, happy life. And there's still one left - Anita!
(SE) Flames grow on all sides.
Nick: Come on, Anita! I'm here. Come out!
(SE) A woman's groan is heard.
Nick: Ah, there you are, Anita.
(SE) Zombie Anita approaches. The flames continue to grow.
Nick: Forgive me, Anita... I've been a terrible husband to you. But it's over now. Come with me to Heaven!
(SE) The burned wall collapses next to them.
Nick: I love you, Anita. And we'll die together!
(SE) The flames engulf the husband and wife.
JANE'S HOUSE, SECOND FLOOR, ONE OF THE ROOMS
(SE) The fire is furious, devouring everything in its path. Jane, coughing, descends to the first floor.
Jane: Dad... Dad...

THE FOURTH NIGHT - A WARNING...
JANE'S HOUSE, OUTSIDE
(SE) The house is in flames as nearby traffic stops, a crowd of onlookers gathers.
Man: And where are the firefighters? They're late again?
Woman: What about Nick and Jane?
Man: It's too late. I think they're gone.
(SE) The crowd begins to gossip.
Woman: There! Jane over here!
Woman: Jane! Run here quickly, Jane!
JANE'S HOUSE, ON THE PORCH
(SE) The fire rages, the house's walls collapse with a crash.
Jane: (in shock) Dad... dad...
Woman: (from a distance) Jane! What happened? Run here, faster!
Jane: You're all here now... When my father warned you, no one listened to him, why are you all here now...
Man: Faster! Jane, the house is coming down!
(SE) The fire blazes ever stronger. Suddenly, Nick's cry is heard.
Nick: ANITA-AAA!
Jane: Mom! It can't be? MAMA!
Man: What is it? Don't go back in there!
Woman: Jane!
Man: Stop, the house will collapse!
(SE) With cracks and a crash, the house collapses. The sirens of fire engines finally buzz in the distance.
AT JANE'S HOUSE
(SE) Sometime later. The busying of a crowd.
Fireman: (by radio) We're from the fifth brigade. We've extinguished the fire. It's over.
First Man: So how'd the house fire start, officer?
Officer: Apparently, Nick is to blame, he was drunk. Probably passed out and didn't put out one of his cigarettes.
First Woman: Poor Jane...
Second Man: At least they are all together now... And Nick wasn't a bad guy.
Second Woman: Why ya scratching yourself? Are you sick?
Third Man: Yeah, my whole body's itchy and my head's spinning.
First Man: I've got that too? It itches all the time.
Second Woman: It seems a lot of the street has this and got sick so quickly.
Third Man: How it itches, it's horrible. What is it!? Oh, how it itches!
(SE) Insects chirp, mountain wolves howl in the distance.
