Background
Biohazard The Escape was an attraction based in Universal Studios Osaka, Japan. Located just down the street from where Biohazard The Real is based. Designed and created by SCRAP Co., Ltd. SCRAP is a internationally established company with over one million people participating up to 2013 and considered the premier Escape Room team in Japan. The event began on January 23rd 2015 and commenced on May 10th 2015. Unlike previous installments such as The Real, The Escape was a typical escape room game set in the Biohazard universe that required players to use their intelligence. This attraction has a reservation system, so you have to order your tickets in advance. The participants had to work as a team to solve “riddles” and escape within 60 minutes. But with the intro and the finale, the total time spent in the attraction is about an hour and a half. Up to as many as 50 participants could all experience The Escape at one time.

The world's first attraction of "Biohazard" is currently being held at the Universal Studios Japan in Osaka City! What is the content about?
Under the title of "Universal Japan", Universal Studios Japan is developing the world's first attraction by gathering four brands of popular works that Japan is proud of in the world. One of the popular lineups is "Biohazard: The Escape", a real escape game that reproduces the world of "Biohazard" with detailed quality.
The attraction is set in a huge four-story Raccoon City TV station. Participants are set to be spectators of public broadcasting, and an incident occurs during the tour! Gather information using a tablet terminal dedicated to attractions, and try to escape from the TV station within an hour while wandering around the station and dodging zombies and various traps. The sense of urgency to solve the mystery while being chased by real zombies and in a race against time is exactly what the Raccoon citizens who were hit by in a sudden disaster experienced in the game. You can enjoy the world of "Biohazard" with a feeling that is a bit different from the game where you challenge the incident with a weapon.
In addition to attractions, at the Finigans Bar & Grill, you can enjoy the "Biohazard" menu as a reflection upon defeat or a victory celebration, so it is certain that you can enjoy a day full of "Biohazard", so please join in. We want you to try it during the period.
An Incident has occurred!!
An outbreak surrounds you in an incident in a realistic TV studio! And are these soldiers really allies or enemies?
Various information is provided on the tablets distributed to the participating teams as the game progresses. It's a six-language device, so we are happy to say that even foreigners can enjoy it.
In addition to the Studio Pass (admission ticket), you will need a "Biohazard" ticket (advance ticket • price 2500 yen same-day ticket • price 3000 yen) to use at the attraction.
The venue will be experienced on a first-come, first-served basis, with 4 people per team in principle. Please come with all the people who want to participate together, such as family and friends. In principle, you can experience this with your family and friends in the same team, but please be careful in the following cases;

The stage is the television station “RCBN (Raccoon City Broadcasting Network)”. This building is a TV studio that was once operated by MBS (Mainichi Broadcasting System) ( withdrawn at the end of March 2014), which means that it is a "really abandoned TV station facility". As guests you are sent to visit the TV station on September 26th 1998 as stated by Pia.co.Jp “If you listen carefully to the pre-show where the escape game begins, you can see that the current time setting is September 26, 1998.” Most players were very impressed with the set design, it was said on many occasions to be extremely Bio-esque and true the the verse, one player did complain about an issue that it was too dark. Everyone has gathered to watch the filming of a TV program, which introduces the latest Umbrella Corp. product—a medical patch that can heal you. In-Universe this could be seen as Umbrella trying to help the Raccoon citizens by unveiling a new product that the citizens can use in the on-going outbreak. However Umbrella has much darker sinister intentions.
In the midst of the program, the director declares the company he conducted an investigation on was the "Umbrella Corporation," and he found that the "human zombie" phenomenon that occurred in Raccoon City was caused by the T-virus developed by the Umbrella Corporation.
At this point, the studio suddenly loses power, and something like smoke spouted from the set. The smoke is actually "T-virus," and Umbrella has spread the T-virus to silence the director who uncovered the information, and even studio visitors who heard the truth.
Suddenly an outbreak occurs and zombies pour into the room, even Lickers begin dropping from the ceiling, the Umbrella Special Forces begin to open fire.
Suddenly an outbreak occurs and zombies pour into the room, even Lickers begin dropping from the ceiling, the Umbrella Special Forces begin to open fire.
Once the suppression is completed, the Captain of the Special Forces explains the situation. The T-virus has infected everyone here. It was also discovered that the turmoil has caused the studio to be shut down and sealed and eventually the studio will be blown up to contain the virus. It will take 60 minutes from now until the onset of infection and the explosion. The director gives you the first clue and then everyone is divided into groups of 4 people. You are given a dedicated digital terminal "Player Pad" which you can use to help with clues for example by taking pictures of suspicious materials to help you later on, a map, and a box with a key, you now have to escape in a time limit of 60 minutes...
Your tablet receives an email from Al Truman with a puzzle in it.
Translation by Nora
“From Al Truman
Obtain the anti-viral agent
In case you are reading this message, I want you to escape from this RCBN immediately.
Then, if you were to be infected by the t-virus, first obtain the anti-viral agent. The anti-viral agent is in my room, and I left it with my assistant.
However, it can only be handed to those who deciphered the code, so that no one else could take it.
Once you get the anti-viral agent, follow the instructions of my assistant.
Solve Code (Blue button)”
Now you exit from the studio and into the TV station. From here on is said to be somewhat of a labyrinth, dead ends, blocked corridors and blocked doors. It is said to have been very difficult to navigate, one player recalled getting lost after about 10 steps.

The TV station has 4 floors. The number of rooms were quite large, and the creation of each room was full-scale, and set in the world view of bio which was reproduced perfectly. Whilst navigating the building Biohazard soundtracks from numerous games plays in the background with zombie and BOW sound effects. Meanwhile, as you attempt solving the mystery you can constantly in fear of the attacking zombies. In addition, you are always fighting against the clock with the 60 minute time limit at which time if you do not complete you are overcome by the t- virus infection.
Most of the puzzles require you to visit 2 rooms, on different floors – the studio is huge. There are 5 puzzles in total, after solving 3 – The first one is where you have to enter a series of symbols into your iPad. The symbols, from top to bottom, are: moon crescent, spade, star, star in hexagon. This will grant you access to the director’s office, where you will be able to receive your patch. Other puzzles included a digital virus match with a large screen and keypad, puzzles that need to be solved with pen and paper, puzzles built into your iPad and many others.
After you get the patch, you can go to the sub-control room where you’ll need to solve the puzzle by looking at the map. The answer is RAIN. This will disable the lasers. 7369 will unlock your case, which contains a key card and a locker key. You can use the key card to access the stairwell from the 1st floor and the key to unlock the locker at the top and get a gun.

Finally, proceed to the 4th floor and look at the zombie guard for the code to the laser corridor. It’s 9152.

After you go through the lasers, you will have a chance to go into an area we didn’t get into and shoot something exciting. This is where you watch a battle between the UBCS and a Tyrant the Tyrant kills the entire UBCS unit.
A lot of teams that did make it to the end were unable to open the case, get the gun or solve the final puzzle about what was going on. It is said that there is a final battle scene with zombies and a Super Tyrant. The attraction featured two endings, one normal ending and one “True Ending”. Usually only one group solved everything so out of 25 teams one is successful. Unfortunately those who did pass have not given any details of this “True Ending” so it is unknown but judging by the image below and the synopsis for this attraction it involves the Super Tyrant and the successful group escaping the city via helicopter.

Masachika Kawata Interview
--Please tell us about your intention to participate in “Universal Cool Japan” and your thoughts on USJ Japan.
Kawata: We think that games are media that are in line with the current position of USJ. By combining Universal Studios Japan's entertainment and SCRAP's escape game, "Biohazard", which is an exciting series, isn't it possible to further spread the attraction to the world? So far, we have developed shooting-type attractions such as “Biohazard: The Real 2”, but this time, we can make the experience more in line with the game by adding different elements like this.
--What are the highlights of “Biohazard: The Escape”?
Kawata: Even though it's a group of four, it's an attraction that you can think of as "Biohazard" in that you wander around in the dark looking for hints. While solving the mystery, it also creates a sense from the game that "I do not know what is in the dark". It's a good harmony of what you can't do in "Biohazard", and what you can do in an escape game, and what you can do because of Universal Studios Japan. It’s a fun source of entertainment, where "sensitivity" is a major theme.
--I felt that "Biohazard: The Escape" is perfect for a date because you can enjoy the excitement in the dark. Was that something you were aware of?
Kawata: I didn't take the darkness into consideration in terms of dating, but it is a game where communication is key demanding that you must work together to solve difficult problems, so in that sense it is perfect for dating. Although there is a time limit, I think that it is more suitable for dating than in the case of "Biohazard: The Real 2" because you can go at your own pace.
--Please tell us your future plans.
Kawata: I have been working with Universal Studios Japan on "Biohazard" for quite some time, so I continue to think about what I can do in the future. Also, "Biohazard HD Remaster" is currently being distributed digitally, and next month (February), "Biohazard Revelations 2" is also planned to be digitally distributed, so now "Biohazard" can be seen in many new forms of entertainment. I think it's all very good timing.
--I think that "Biohazard Revelations 2" has been developed over a long period of time. Please tell us about your candid feeling, which is to be released next month.
Kawata: It was a tougher development than I originally thought. All the staff were very busy, so I think that it was a good outcome. We will deliver one episode at a low price of about 800 yen so that as many people as possible can pick it up, so please experience "Biohazard" in the game.
--What are your thoughts on overseas expansion of “Biohazard: The Escape”?
Kawata: The handsets distributed at this attraction support 6 languages. There are many overseas customers at Universal Studios Japan, and since "Biohazard" is a content that has received a great deal of attention overseas, I hope many people will experience it.
--Please tell us about the points you liked about the collaboration with Universal Studios Japan.
Kawata: I feel that the content of “Biohazard” is getting more exposure due to the fact that we have collaborated with Universal Studios Japan. There was also a concern that “Biohazard” has only a history of games, and that it might be a high hurdle for those who are playing the series for the first time. However, I think that by developing attractions in such places, even people who do not normally interact with the game can become familiar with the title of "Biohazard". In fact, at the time of “Biohazard: The Real 2”, I was very happy that we saw children walking by who saw the sign and said, “Oh, it's a “Biohazard”!”. I think it is a benefit for us that such recognition spreads.
--What do you think about the overall performance of “Biohazard: The Escape”?
Kawata: I'm very satisfied with the fact that one building becomes a game. I think the sense of accomplishment at the end of the event is exactly what you can call entertainment. I think that the feeling of unity of forming a team and solving a mystery is difficult to obtain in a game played alone, so please try it out hardcore gamers.
