SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE
Jake Muller's been active as a mercenary on the front lines of battlefields since his mid-teens.
Shortly after joining a mercenary unit, Jake's combat techniques were beaten into him by a certain skilled mercenary. Although his instructions were stern, he cared for the members, initially appearing to ensure the unit's survival, and leading Jake to put his trust in someone besides his mother for the first time.
However, Jake's unit was completely wiped out due to a betrayal by that man, who was actually an enemy unit's spy. Being betrayed by someone who was like a father to him left a deep scar in Jake's heart. This incident made it impossible for Jake to trust others.
Afterwards, his harsh life as a mercenary contributed to the desolation of his mind. The incident occurred three years ago in South America. Jake was 17-years-old at the time.
There's remaining testimony from someone who barely survived with Jake in the unit wiped out by that man's betrayal.
---
"Oh, yeah, that's right. That was three years ago in South America. I remember it well. Our unit's commander was in bed with the enemy. Enemy soldiers surrounded our unit in the blink of an eye in a massive pincer.
We fought back desperately but there were too many of them. As more and more of our comrades got picked off, before we knew it, I noticed only me and Jake were left. An enemy put his gun away and approached Jake with a knife. Guess he skimped on bullets.
...And then what happened?
Jake put up a hell of a fight. It was awesome. Although he'd already run out of bullets a while before and was empty-handed, Jake's also real tough with his bare hands.
As it went on, our reinforcements showed up and we managed to pull through. Jake was a battered wreck. I don't know how the hell he stuck it out.
We were saved in the end, but Jake hasn't allowed anyone to get close to him ever since. He trusted that traitorous commander so much, he must've lost faith in people."

SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE
Jake Muller spent most of his teenage years as a mercenary, fighting on the front lines of countless conflicts the world over.
The first group of mercenaries he joined taught him everything he needed to know about armed and unarmed combat. His trainer was strict and demanding, but treated him almost like a son, and Jake found himself able to feel a sense of attachment to him, something he had only previously felt for his mother. Unfortunately, that mercenary was actually a double agent who sold out the whole unit.
After being betrayed by his father figure, Jake put his faith in the only person who had never let him down--himself. Any compassion in his heart was lost, and he drifted from war to war as a soldier of fortune.
Jake was 17 at the time. He and only one other person on the team survived the incident. Below is a testimony made by that other survivor.
---
Yeah, I remember it.
About three years ago, we were in South America and our so-called captain was in bed with the enemy. We were surrounded before we knew it. We tried to fight, but there was just too many of 'em, so we started droppin' like flies, one by one till it was just Jake and me.
They put away their guns--tryin' to save ammo I guess--and came at Jake with knives. He was out of bullets, but he still stood his ground. Helluva thing to see; I couldn't believe how strong and intense he was. But reinforcements came eventually and saved us at the last minute. The kid put up a good fight, but he was a mess because of the whole thing.
He don't trust no one since then. I guess he really thought highly of that traitor.
