That's why he was content with handling his almost honorary post as Assistant Deputy Manager, and didn't worry himself over it to the extent he only remembered the title when asking the impossible of the Accounting Department to accomodate his research and development expenses.

Drenched in greasy sweat and overwhelmed by the silent pressures emanating from the monitor, he looked up and caught a face a step ahead of the monitor.
"W... what's the beef Mister Burton?"
His hoarse voice eeked out from the back of his throat and he didn't know whether he'd reached the monitor.
It began about a month ago with an email from an old friend, Jill Valentine.
She had said an old acquaintance was looking for an excellent gunsmith, had seen Jill's Samurai Edge and wanted to be introduced to the maker of the "Samurai Edge A1" that one could call a refined version of the former Samurai Edge, which Quint himself made several years ago.
He initially intended to decline.
He was running much research and development simultaneously with new ideas constantly overflowing.
Thinking it was a custom gun, he soon changed his mind after hearing the client's name.
The client's name was "Barry Burton."
There are some legendary individuals in the BSAA called the Original Eleven.
Jill mentioned above was one but her partner Chris Redfield can also be considered a true living legend.
Formerly belonging to the U.S. Air Force, afterwards Chris belonged to the Raccoon Police Department's urban police special ops unit "S.T.A.R.S." at the time of the famous Mansion Incident that is carved into bioterror history.
Temporarily registered at the BSAA, Barry Burton is a man continuing to fight bioterrorism in the role of a BSAA advisor.
And above all he was the man who along with gunsmith Joe Kendo built the original of that excellent "Samurai Edge" gun.
Barry was counting on him for a gun.
One could say he should have taken great pride as an engineer.
Barry's request was simple.

He studied and inspected the "Samurai Edge" he borrowed from former S.T.A.R.S./current BSAA Jill Valentine and developed the "Samurai Edge A1" based on the new M9A1.
Afterwards this gun was given to Jill as she was active on the frontlines of anti-bioterrorism, but at this time a S.T.A.R.S. medallion on the grip and S.T.A.R.S. and Custom Shop Kendo on the slide were added.

Due to bitter experiences in his SWAT days Barry became a "power fanatic" in firearms, idealized a custom and asked his close friend, gunsmith Joe Kendo, to further improve the "Samurai Edge" custom handgun provided to S.T.A.R.S.

A M92F-based custom handgun supplied to the Raccoon Police special forces "S.T.A.R.S." It was made by gunsmith Joe Kendo.
The brigadier style is used to increase the thickness of the slide lock in order to use special heavy bullets that fire 9x19mm bullets at the initial velocity of .357 magnum. The sharp silhouette and silver barrel are associated with a samurai blade, so it was named the "Samurai Edge."

The picture of the Samurai Edge he'd sent was horrible.
The characteristic brigadier slide was cracked, the compensator melted and bubbled, the magazine laid bare and the hybrid custom grip was damaged.
When even an original Samurai Edge could end up like this, it was far beyond an engineer like Quint's imagination what sort of situations he'd fallen into.

Back in Barry's S.T.A.R.S. days before that Mansion Incident, a custom Samurai Edge was made for Barry by gunsmith Joe Kendo.
Feeling that the 9mm chambered Samurai Edge supplied to S.T.A.R.S. was lacking in power, Barry asked his close friend Joe Kendo for a custom. With that a Samurai Edge for Barry's personal use was made based on the "M96F" chambered for .40SW ammunition and finished into a bold design unique to Barry's proficient brawn.

He had studied the Samurai Edge itself exhaustively along with a track record in producing the Samurai Edge A1.
His skills had notably improved since then as well.
In comparison to Jill's, Barry's base gun was a M96F attached with a large compensator to dampen recoil and used a long shot magazine to supplement the reduced number of bullets, but the basic design is the same.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN EASY TASK
Production began triumphantly and was completed two days ago, one month after receiving the request, and sent to Barry living in the USA, then he received a call from Barry who bathed him with an angry voice ringing like a thundering hammer for ten minutes.
Barry fell silent, his wary face unchanged from the first blow, and Quint spoke back in reply with his hoarse voice.
"Cetcham. What do you see right now?"
"Wha, I don..."
Quint didn't know the question's intent but focused his attention on his field of vision.
(Don't look, but rather observe)
He couldn't remember what movie the line was from.
Perhaps it was a line from a Japanese anime he saw long ago, but it unmistakebly became one of the foundations for Quint as an engineer.
Analyze what you see, classify, hypothesize and draw a conclusion.
Through this Quint has solved several difficult problems.
And now he still draws one conclusion.
"Ah..."
His voice eeked out, unable to verbalize.
Barry Burton was now on the monitor.
The face of a soldier with a long military record, whiteness mixed in his hair, a beard with deep wrinkles tucked away on his face.
But the prime of a warrior had already left him, and it was now the face of a man approaching old age.
Barry spoke first.
When he had asked him to make a new Samurai Edge for him he meant "for me, now."
Barry had asked for a Samurai Edge one could get the best performance out of but didn't want the high power derived from the .40SW bullets.
He had caught only the surface of the words and was content with a simple job imitating the previous Samurai Edge.
Quint was ashamed with his ignorance.
"Mister Burton you might think I have a lot of gall but please let me take the challenge once more. This time I'll make a Samurai Edge 'specially for the current you."
Quint's voice held no more fear or hesitation.
Barry nodded broadly, touched by his honest spirit.

In 1996, the spec ops unit "S.T.A.R.S." was established by the Raccoon Police Department to immediately deal with increasing urban terrorism, diversifying crime networks, many emergencies and so on.
It consisted only of specialists headhunted regardless of whether they were military or private, and Barry Burton was 38 years old at this time, enrolled in "Alpha Team" led by Captain Albert Wesker. In operations he was often on the frontlines as BUM (backup man) supporting PM (point man) Chris Redfield as a team.
The individual with the highest skills in acts of combat as PM, but BUM is also required to be a parter equal in ability to the PM. It can be inferred that Barry's combat ability, with the strongest physical constitution and ability to use heavy weapons, was also in line with Chris.

"I'm making a Samurai Edge for the present you. I can't make it if I don't know the present you. Ah, don't worry. I greased some palms and asked you to be dispatched to the European Headquarters as an instructor. Oh? Didn't think I could do something like that? I'm the Technology Development Division Assistant Deputy Manager. People listen plenty if I just dangle this title."
He decided to follow intently as Quint obediently explained.
Barry gave a little guidance to the juniors during the day and spent most of the time in Quint's lab.
Beginning with height/weight measurements, body proportion measurements, physical strength, muscular strength, eyesight, etc, the collection of basic data was complete after a rushing day.
The optimum solution backed up by the collected data, Barry's strong thoughts on the gun and Quint's technology and knowledge made a big difference from the start.
Looking at them from the side it would seem they were arguing a lot.
In reality, many members of the Technology Development Division shrugged at the angry voices leaking out from the lab.

"Joe Kendo gave this to me as a birthday present. It's not especially customized. But it's the best M9 and he's adjusted every detail. This'll be great for the new Samurai Edge."

The M92 series developed by firearms manufacturer Pietro Beretta, based in Italy, was adopted by U.S. forces in 1985 under the name of "M9 9mm Service Pistol."
As a result, the M9 (M92FS) became a major player on the private market, and has been remodeled to improve its safety when the slide is broken.
Between the "M92F", the base of the Samurai Edge supplied to S.T.A.R.S. members, and the base "M9" of the Samurai Edge which Quint is working on anew for Barry, the main difference is whether it's a product for the European market or US market. In terms of specifications and performance, both are equal in quality.
The "Samurai Edge A1" sent by Quint to Jill is based on the improved version "M9A1", a more modernized version of the "M9."

BARRY'S GUN, IN HIS HANDS AS HE STANDS IN THE SHOOTING BOOTH, IS CLEARLY DIFFERENT FROM THE OLD SAMURAI EDGE NOW
Even though the sides are magnificently sculpted, the larger compensator is particularly noticeable. The previous compensator had a structure to extract gas at the time of firing, and although it had a strong effect of suppressing muzzle jump, it was also pointed out that the muzzle blast obstructed the view of the front sight. Barry would've chosen power over accuracy when he was younger, but this time it was reviewed again. The compensator generates a two-stage muzzle brake with a structure to discharge the firing gas to the left, right and front in the first step (front side of the muzzle) and discharge missed gas in the second step. Since the inside is in the form of a calculated ring, it's possible to use the muzzle brake easily, exhausting the gas as effectively as possible while eliminating impurities, metal debris and the like in the explosion generated when fired. This made it possible to further stabilize trajectory. This structure was where Quint and Barry spent the most time.
Furthermore, the top surface of the compensator is also designed to prevent reflection.
As a reference for Barry, who likes revolvers, Quint introduced him to his custom revolver.
And although the large stabilizer is good, it goes without saying that the picatinny rail has subdivided grooves corresponding to the latest devices, and on top of that, grooves for lightening are applied to the sides, and with balance in consideration, there's no loss in weight reduction.
Fortunately, recoil was reduced due to the change in the bullets used, and the firing gas was changed to a sideways ejection system. While utilizing the gun's power, reviewing the gun's balance itself, and by reducing the weight of it to be lighter, it became a model placing importance on stability and portability, the highest level finish accounting for the physical strength of "present" Barry.
In addition, a device was also applied to the grip in order to raise the hold feeling of the gun.
A further evolution of the conventional hybrid custom grip, the wood part and rubber part with finger channels are fused, shaped to fit Barry's hands, and the shape is asymmetrical to the gun's frame. It caught large eyes.
The purpose of adopting the wood part this time is also the result of following the image of a revolver. Of course, it goes without saying that the "Gold & Red" medallion, Barry's image color, is inherited at the grip's center.
The combat sights are also scaled up to change shape to match the compensator.

"A sword's gotta have a signature, after all."
As Quint moved his fingers excitedly over the keyboard, the machinery tool began to work.
The blade pounded on the slide, engraving letters.
On seeing it, Barry muttered while smiling.
"I guess you're gonna do something cool, Quint!"
"Just showin' respect to my elders, Barry."
When the machinery tool stopped, Quint removed the slide, reassembled it with his practiced hands and handed it over to Barry.
Slowly, Barry held the new Samurai Edge he received.
There it was, "CUSTOM Kendo SHOP", engraved in an elegant typeface.
This was the precise moment the "SAMURAI EDGE Barry Burton Model Ver.II" was born!

SAMURAI EDGE AND THE KENDO BROS.
Two "Kendos" were involved in the creation of the "Samurai Edge", famous for being awarded to the Raccoon Police special forces S.T.A.R.S. Joe Kendo, who runs the custom gun shop "KENDO" in San Francisco, and his brother Robert Kendo who ran "Kendo Gun Shop" in Raccoon City.
In December 1997, three handguns made their mark in the trial to decide the regulation handgun of S.T.A.R.S. The first was a handgun from the pharmaceutical company "Umbrella", which had the clout to influence Raccoon City's municipal government. The second was a handgun made by Joe at the request of the Raccoon Police. The third was Robert's, who heard of the trial from his friend Barry, and was a handgun shaped to Barry's requests.
The trial defined the requirements for the formal handgun, but the handgun Robert presented deviated completely from those conditions, so it was essentially a showdown between Umbrella and Joe.
In the trial, a variety of tests were conducted using various types of ammunition, more than 40,000 live fire tests, corrosion tests in seawater and drop tests. Joe's handgun achieved the best results in all of them, was partialy improved in March 1998 after four S.T.A.R.S. members tested it and cleared in June 1998, and it was decided to adopt the system.
Joe's skills elevated the Samurai Edge adopted by the S.T.A.R.S. members to the level of an "F1" race car. However, Chris, Jill, Barry and Wesker asked Joe to make further improvements to the Samurai Edge. Four custom Samurai Edges reflecting each's individuality were made.

M9 9mm Service Pistol
The M92 series developed by firearms manufacturer Pietro Beretta, based in Italy, was adopted by U.S. forces in 1985 under the name of "M9 9mm Service Pistol."
As a result, the M9 (M92FS) became a major player on the private market, and has been remodeled to improve its safety when the slide is broken.
Between the "M92F", the base of the Samurai Edge supplied to S.T.A.R.S. members, and the base "M9" of the Samurai Edge which Quint is working on anew for Barry, the main difference is whether it's a product for the European market or US market. In terms of specifications and performance, both are equal in quality.
The "Samurai Edge A1" sent by Quint to Jill is based on the improved version "M9A1", a more modernized version of the "M9."

BARRY'S GUN, IN HIS HANDS AS HE STANDS IN THE SHOOTING BOOTH, IS CLEARLY DIFFERENT FROM THE OLD SAMURAI EDGE NOW
Even though the sides are magnificently sculpted, the larger compensator is particularly noticeable. The previous compensator had a structure to extract gas at the time of firing, and although it had a strong effect of suppressing muzzle jump, it was also pointed out that the muzzle blast obstructed the view of the front sight. Barry would've chosen power over accuracy when he was younger, but this time it was reviewed again. The compensator generates a two-stage muzzle brake with a structure to discharge the firing gas to the left, right and front in the first step (front side of the muzzle) and discharge missed gas in the second step. Since the inside is in the form of a calculated ring, it's possible to use the muzzle brake easily, exhausting the gas as effectively as possible while eliminating impurities, metal debris and the like in the explosion generated when fired. This made it possible to further stabilize trajectory. This structure was where Quint and Barry spent the most time.
Furthermore, the top surface of the compensator is also designed to prevent reflection.
As a reference for Barry, who likes revolvers, Quint introduced him to his custom revolver.
And although the large stabilizer is good, it goes without saying that the picatinny rail has subdivided grooves corresponding to the latest devices, and on top of that, grooves for lightening are applied to the sides, and with balance in consideration, there's no loss in weight reduction.
Fortunately, recoil was reduced due to the change in the bullets used, and the firing gas was changed to a sideways ejection system. While utilizing the gun's power, reviewing the gun's balance itself, and by reducing the weight of it to be lighter, it became a model placing importance on stability and portability, the highest level finish accounting for the physical strength of "present" Barry.
In addition, a device was also applied to the grip in order to raise the hold feeling of the gun.
A further evolution of the conventional hybrid custom grip, the wood part and rubber part with finger channels are fused, shaped to fit Barry's hands, and the shape is asymmetrical to the gun's frame. It caught large eyes.
The purpose of adopting the wood part this time is also the result of following the image of a revolver. Of course, it goes without saying that the "Gold & Red" medallion, Barry's image color, is inherited at the grip's center.
The combat sights are also scaled up to change shape to match the compensator.
The gun was packed with the two men's thoughts to the last minute, such as being left-right asymmetrical to avoid AFPB (Auto Firing Pin Block).
When the trigger is pulled, the bullets unleashed from the barrel are immediately sucked into the target.

Barry nodded with satisfaction, but Quint was different.
"Not yet Mister Burton! It's not done!"
That said, Quint stepped into the shooting booth, grabbed the gun from Barry's hand, and returned to the lab.
A dumbfounded Barry followed and entered the lab, Quint took off the Samurai Edge's slide and fixed it to the clamps of a machinery tool.
"A sword's gotta have a signature, after all."
As Quint moved his fingers excitedly over the keyboard, the machinery tool began to work.
The blade pounded on the slide, engraving letters.
On seeing it, Barry muttered while smiling.
"I guess you're gonna do something cool, Quint!"
"Just showin' respect to my elders, Barry."
When the machinery tool stopped, Quint removed the slide, reassembled it with his practiced hands and handed it over to Barry.
Slowly, Barry held the new Samurai Edge he received.
There it was, "CUSTOM Kendo SHOP", engraved in an elegant typeface.
This was the precise moment the "SAMURAI EDGE Barry Burton Model Ver.II" was born!

SAMURAI EDGE AND THE KENDO BROS.
Two "Kendos" were involved in the creation of the "Samurai Edge", famous for being awarded to the Raccoon Police special forces S.T.A.R.S. Joe Kendo, who runs the custom gun shop "KENDO" in San Francisco, and his brother Robert Kendo who ran "Kendo Gun Shop" in Raccoon City.
In December 1997, three handguns made their mark in the trial to decide the regulation handgun of S.T.A.R.S. The first was a handgun from the pharmaceutical company "Umbrella", which had the clout to influence Raccoon City's municipal government. The second was a handgun made by Joe at the request of the Raccoon Police. The third was Robert's, who heard of the trial from his friend Barry, and was a handgun shaped to Barry's requests.
The trial defined the requirements for the formal handgun, but the handgun Robert presented deviated completely from those conditions, so it was essentially a showdown between Umbrella and Joe.
In the trial, a variety of tests were conducted using various types of ammunition, more than 40,000 live fire tests, corrosion tests in seawater and drop tests. Joe's handgun achieved the best results in all of them, was partialy improved in March 1998 after four S.T.A.R.S. members tested it and cleared in June 1998, and it was decided to adopt the system.
Joe's skills elevated the Samurai Edge adopted by the S.T.A.R.S. members to the level of an "F1" race car. However, Chris, Jill, Barry and Wesker asked Joe to make further improvements to the Samurai Edge. Four custom Samurai Edges reflecting each's individuality were made.

The owner Robert Kendo, younger brother of Joe Kendo, had a close relationship with Barry through their common hobby (collecting guns).
However, in September 1998, a biohazard occurred throughout Raccoon City. Robert thought about evacuating to the next town, but was attacked by Zombies and lost his life.
