The t-virus (short for "Tyrant Virus") was a highly adaptable bioweapons-grade pathogen and the main component for the Umbrella Corporation in their biological weapons development program, created from an attempt to weaponize the Progenitor virus for military use and application. The t-virus became the basis for the majority of Umbrella's research. It inherits the genetic modifying properties of the Progenitor virus and drastically improves on them. The very first strain of the t-virus was created by Dr. James Marcus.

Following the T-virus outbreak that afflicted the city in September 1998, the entire community was destroyed by an experimental nuclear weapon by the United States government, as part of Mission Code: XX (Bacillus Terminate).
