I know this is a Resident Evil fansite, but I also know there are some Silent Hill fans here who may or may not have played this game.  If you have, could you please explain the plot to me because I didn't understand it at all.

For this game, or the series

For this game, or the series in general?

I've never really understood

I've never really understood those games.  Does some curse happen to people who have done bad things or just end up there  in the misty world?  And you have the devil world as well which is like WTF fuckin' demons!

I really liked the first

I really liked the first game, and the second and third. 4th one less so and I haven't really got any of the other games (Origins, 5, Shattered Memories...)

I believe Origins, SH1 and 3 all follow the Alessa storyline as portrayed in the movie, albeit tweaked.  SH2 is all about James' personal gripes he has and how he is drawn to the town.  Although I'm not sure if that explains the smokey town as I thought that was part of Alessa's world, idk lol...

I meant Shattered Memories

I meant Shattered Memories in general.  What I could make of it, it's a retelling of SH1.

I think the official term

I think the official term was re-imagining I believe.

Yangtzee has done his zero punctuation review on it.

Okay as someone who does

Okay as someone who does like Silent Hill games, can anyone recommed Silent Hill V Homecoming or the Wii exclusive, Silent Hill Shattered Memories?

All the talk of the 2nd movie has got me interested in the series again!

The entire town of Silent

The entire town of Silent Hill was built on an ancient Indian religous site, which was known to be supernatural. It is a complex story, so if you want the full details, go to the Silent Hill wiki. They will tell you everything you need to know.

I still remember the

I still remember the difficulties that I faced with the piano puzzle in PS1.

But the final series of Silent Hill that I played is Silent Hill Origins.

Actually, this part is very easy for me compared with the older ones.

Busty nurses (inspired by the movie) are back!

I can recommend Homecoming, because I played the game and I didn't agreed with the rant of most of the SH community fans. It tells a interesting story, to me. I also liked the introduction of Shepherd's Glenn, a city neighbored by Silent Hill (and kinda of think that something similar should be done in RE as well, aka Stone Ville...).

I just must say that the gameplay was changed to something similar to RE4, more action focused, and that can make some people don't like the game, but I liked it.

Changing subjects, Downpour is looking great, I can't wait to play it.

There's also loads of

There's also loads of psychological themes everywhere. Every single enemy and even how the town of Silent Hill manifests depends on the individual's mind entering it. I can't say there's a "lineal" plot since al the games seem to focus on different aspects of the protagonist, like different stories that intertwine but not necessarily relate directly to each other. The basic point is that the protagonist is "summoned" by the town (yeah the town, or so I've seen and heard so far) to be put to the test or to accomplish something. What for? Well that's the real mystery.

Avoid Shattered Memories.

Avoid Shattered Memories. Unless you like things that aren't really Silent Hill.

I didn't liked SM, the PS2 version (the only one that I played). But I think that even the Wii version wouldn't help the fact that not being able to attack the game's enemies pisses me off, among the alternate story-line for a game that already was very well done.

Sindra, do you mind sharing what you think about Homecoming?

For me, Silent Hill is only

For me, Silent Hill is only 2nd to Resident Evil.  They are both great, but Silent Hill has a better story and atmosphere and Resident Evil has MUCH better gameplay. With Silent Hill it's all about your inner demons.  The more guilt you have the worse off you will be. (Imagine your deepest darkest emotional burden manifesting and trying to kill you.)  Yeah!

First game was decent enough.

First game was decent enough. On a note, the music composer of SH2 stole Mikami's line about silence itself being music and bashed the Bio music composers.

I know it's bad to say, but

I know it's bad to say, but stay the Hell away from the series when it hits the fourth game. The first three games are amazing, and Silent Hill 2 remains one of my favorite games, and one of the most scariest games I've ever played. Resident Evil... well they're not as scary as they used to be... and even then, compared to the Silent Hill series, it's nothing at all. Games, as well as horror movies these days, try to scare you with loud crashes and things popping out of no where. Silent Hill wasn't about that, though it had SOME moments of creatures popping out, there weren't many instances. But now... ugh. I did like RE4 when I saw the first trailer for it years before it came out. Looked so damn good, and scary... boy was the final game far from what I saw. I'm ranting.

If you're going to play Silent Hill, stick with the original three. Don't forget about the HD versions of parts 2 and 3 coming out soon for PS3 and... that other system. If you like them, the first three, you MAY continue with the rest. Oh and don't even get me started on Shattered Memories >:(

I'm intrigued about Shattered

I'm intrigued about Shattered Memories again for a few reasons.  Firstly, I loved the original game and secondly, I feel obliged to buy a new game for the Wii.  Otherwise it doesn't see a lot of action.

I read a review and the lack of weapons seems a brave strategy but fighting off ghouls with the Wii-mote looks oddly fun, and the survival horror mantra of "run is good" looks very accurate in this title.

Shattered Memories was quite

Shattered Memories was quite a good game. It had a nice story, and a nice twist at the end.

I for one LOVE the world of

I for one LOVE the world of Silent Hill! I love the games, comics and the movies.  I'm realy looking forward to the book of Lost Memories (which people should stop bitching about...it's just a side story), Downpour, the HD and the new movie.

Just purchased Shattered

Just purchased Shattered Memories for the Wii.  Haven't gotten far and just met Cybill, but I am very impressed so far. Has the same "feel" of the original game which I equally loved.  The use of the Wii mote is a great addition and although the graphics are not on par with an HD console I can't but be impressed with the presentation of the game.

Also, I'm intrigued about how the game changes depending on the pysch checklist at the beginning of the game!

Just finished Shattered

Just finished Shattered Memories, what a game absolutely loved it. Lacked a final boss, but the build up to it was epic, especially in the apartment!  And I did not see the ending at all.  Brilliant.

My question is this as I am not that well versed in Silent Hill mythology - is it canon? Can it be canon at all?

Spoiler: Mouse over to view
My undestanding was the Cheryl died in SH1, well her soul was taken by God thing and then re-born with Heather?  But I read that it can be a sequel to SH bad ending?  But then I guess it messes up with the establish canon? Dahlia Cheryl's mum? Help!

It is not canon. It is just a

It is not canon. It is just a re-imagining of the first game. That is all.

Can it not fit in at all?

Can it not fit in at all?  Being PU staff, I always endevour to make it fit!!!

No, it cannot fit at all.

No, it cannot fit at all. Play the first three games, and you can see as why it cannot fit in the storyline. It is sort of the 'Gaiden' of Silent Hill, except it actually has a good storyline. It is just a side story. That is all. A good side story, might I add, but one nonetheless.

Indeed, it does have a good

Indeed, it does have a good storyline and loved the game. My only gripe was that as soon as you worked out you were safe outside of the nightmare world, it did diminish the fear somewhat.  This was in stark contrast to the nightmare mode, which was terrifying.  The number of times I died being chased etc. Great mechanic.

Anyway I continue by Silent Hill adventure, as I have just purchased Homecoming as an X-mas present for myself!  What can I expect from this game?

I have never played it

I have never played it myself. In fact, I've never even played a silent hill game, but I am somwhat immersed in the mythos of the series like I am with Resident Evil. I hear mixed feelings for Homecoming. Some people say it was good, others say it was the worst piece of crap ever to come out of Konami. All I can say is this, play the first three games. I know for a fact that those are good. I have never seen homecoming at all, but I'm sure you may enjoy it. I think many people's problem with this game is the fact that it wan't as scary.

I have and own the first

I have and own the first three. I bought the now quite rare and pricey on ebay Silent Hill collection that has 2,3,4.

I saw the film and the next day ran out and bought the collection and Silent Hill for PSX!  Not completed SH2 yet, but loved 3. SH1 despite its graphical limitations was a genuinly unsettling experience.  Perhaps the graphics added to it 'cause I thought it was brilliant.

Going to get Origins on PS2 as well to complete the series!

Well Neptune as you should

Well Neptune as you should know Silent Hill games have multiple endings in one of Silent Hill 1 endings you die in a car crash if you wanted that ending to be canon then Shattered Memories would continue that story and is why I thank SM is considered a part of the main SH games. But any way  I would be happy to answer any questions you may have on the Silent Hill mythos.

The only problem with that

The only problem with that is, he is married to Dhalia in SM, while in the original game, his wife is dead. Plus, Harry looks different.

Well his look is just heavily

Well his look is just heavily modrenised so it's no big deal.  Also with his wife, it could just be kinda like a recon (for SM's story only that is) or maybe his wife in the original was his wife as well but died then he found his SM wife and well you can figure the rest.
