I'm a big fan of both the Resident Evil series, as well as the Fallout series. I've played every game in both series' numerous times and I've noticed a few funny similarities that would be cool to compare. Obviously this doesn't work due to some glaring lore issues in each respective franchise, but what if Resident Evil is the precursor to Fallout? Hear me out. Firstly, both franchises feature mutagenic viruses that are meant to be utilized in warfare. In Resident Evil, this is Progenitor and all of the strains that come from it, and in Fallout, it is the FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus) What if the FEV is merely a highly modified strain of the T-Virus dug up by the U.S. Government for use as a Bio Weapon in the Great War? Both viruses feature some striking similarities. For instance, the FEV creates Super Mutants, which are resemble Tyrants almost perfectly, and both viruses also feature a drop in intelligence as a side effect. The Ghouls in Fallout are also rumored to be a random by product of FEV exposure and radiation...strange that they are not dead per-se, but still resemble carnivorous shambling corpses in some cases. The Deathclaw from Fallout also bears a striking resemblance to the Hunters, being as they are man-reptillian hybrids utilizing viruses as a bonding agent at a cellular level. One more thing of note is the advent of the new fist weapon used by Joe in End Of Zoe: It could very well be the origin of the Power Fist from Fallout. Obviously, this isn't a serious post, and speculation doesn't go very far when you consider that they are clearly seperate universes, but it's still fun to think about.

(No subject)

Two huge problems with

Two huge problems with this:

1. If FEV were based on a RE virus, it would seem the virus has become far less powerful. A Super Mutant Behemoth can't compare to a Tyrant. A RE virus leaking into the world would kill and mutate everyone, including plant life.

2. Pre-War Fallout was stuck in the Cold War era, with retro technology, black and white televisions, etc.

You would need to heavily alter one franchise to get it to fit with the other. Although if I were to make connections, I'd point out  the fact non-Feral Ghouls live hundreds of years. Centaurs are horrifically mutated by FEV. Satelite Lasers are a thing in both, as are AI and evil corporations that resort to human experimentation.

Psychic powers have been considered by the RE devs, and FEV can grant those. Human-plant hybrids can be found in both as well (Harold and the Spore Carriers, t-Veronica mutants) .

Oh yeah, I definitely wasn't

Oh yeah, I definitely wasn't wanting to push this as an actual theory considering the glaring lore differences between the two franchises, but it's still cool to stop and think about similarities such as this lol. Thanks for adding more similarities between the two series' universes as well as the strains of Progenitor/T and the FEV. Also, to be fair, I think the FEV could still be considered a stronger variant of the T-Virus that always produces Tyrant-like B.O.W.'s in the Super Mutants, rather then slow, lumbering Zombies. It's also been alluded to that the FEV has affected most of the planet, considering things like Rad-Scorpions, Ghouls, and several other creatures are likely offspring of it's affects.

Well, Super Mutants are

Well, Super Mutants are certainly tougher than zombies. They are also brain damaged (a common effect of t).

I think FEV making Ghouls was retconned, as a crime boss (Eddie Winter, I think) became a Ghoul before the war by exposing himself to radiation, and an NCR camp was Ghoul-ified from a radiation weapon. There are other examples too, like Hancock turning himself with radiation "drugs". If FEV were involved in all the wastland fauna, it would certainly have the size increasing effects in common with t.

RE has experimental energy weapons too.

Oh dang, I wasn't aware that

Oh dang, I wasn't aware that it was completely retconned. I thought it was just a case of not being completely stated but still alluded to with the existence of Ghoul-like offspring of the FEV (Harold and Talius in Fallout 1). Was that something that came about with Bethesda's take on the series or was it earlier then Fallout 3 that this was the case? Either way, two of my favorite franchises have a lot in common haha, can't be a coincidence that they both sit so well with me.

I don't know when it was

I don't know when it was retconned/forgotten. Harold is an oddity for sure - maybe his Ghoulification was unrelated to his FEV mutation?

Both RE and Fallout are awesome, agreed.

EDIT: Tim Cain, developer of Fallout 1, insisted that Ghouls are just from radiation. Chris Taylor, another dev, insisted FEV was also involved. The Fallout bible was written following Taylor's interpretation, but the author was later convinced Cain was correct. So Ghouls are just radiation, even before Bethesda was involved.
