There is a film that has got me feverishly excited & curious beyond belief......When I was 5 my parents came back from the cinema with a book from the film they saw.... in this book there was loads of concept artwork from the film.....my favorite image was of a creature that was looking through what appeared to be a large telescope.....when I was 12 I saw this film and although it was one of the best survival horror films I had ever seen I was very disappointed that the creature I had been so intrigued by, was only in the film near the beginning, and for about 1 minute, and then nothing explores its origins further..... and then......33 years later ~ PROMETHEUS

It looks pretty exciting, I'm definitely gonna see it, Michael Fassbender being my principal reason lol. What I really like is that his character seems like he has the potential to take on a more sinister role by the end of the trailer.
For those of you who know me you will be aware by now that my ambition is unlimited. You know that I will settle for nothing short of greatness or I will die trying. For those of you who do not yet know me my name is Peter Weyland.
And if you'll indulge me... I'd like to change the world.
"Go ahead, tell him what you want. If he fires me I'll thank him for it."
It looks fantastic, a great year for movies 2012, and this could be the best of the best.

Completely agree. Wasn't that excited untill I saw the trailer but now im looking forward to this more than dark knight rises.
If anyone's been following the thread on THIA they'll know I absolutely cannot wait for this movie. My excitement hasn't been this high for any movie since Return of the King, and even then I don't think it was quite as it is now.
With Alien and Blade Runner being two of my favourite films of all time, I'm looking very much forward to this, and hope that, like those films we'll look back in 30 years and say it's a genre masterpiece that transcends time.
Big expectations, but I have faith this time.
I hope we can keep this discussion truly spoiler free until release. :)

Hope so to Ty! I keep an eye out for spoiler free reviews of the film. So many good films this summer, even the Amazing Spider-man which I initially cast off, is starting to look interesting.

Seen it. Average at best really.
Oh well, quickly looking like I'm in the minority with what I think - shame.

It's not a bad film. Just feels unfinished. Ridley says he has two more stories to tell before we arrive at Alien.
"Go ahead, tell him what you want. If he fires me I'll thank him for it."
There's no end of stuff missing from the trailers, makes me wonder if some of it was done for mis-direction, others for marketing.
It's looking likely that at some point something starts running around Prometheus, as Jarek is seen holding a gun shouting "Kill everything, do you copy?" and there's a shootout on board while they escort Weyland.
Also an early version of Fifields death shows Rapace in the truck reversing (presumably toward Fifield - instead of unnamed soldier). Should be a fascinating bluray anyway.

That scene with Janek is referring to the Fitfield fight in the hangar. That whole sequence has been re-edited. It initially took place as Weyland was being escorted down to go to the pyramid and his rover would run over Fifield. But it was changed around.

Ah nice one where can I read about that?

Check out avpgalaxy.net. The forums there are full of great info and theories.

Thanks for that - seems someone has an insider who was close to the production to know, it makes a lot more sense when you think of the cut now.
I presume it was re-arranged to maintain a 2hr run time.

Just saw it last night. Loved it, but had two complaints.
All in all, I liked it. It wasn't groundbreaking or anything, but it was a great story, and as an Alien fan I really enjoyed it.
Can someone explain to me why the android put a blood sample into the guys drink? What was the purpose? Seemed kinda sadistic to simply just see what the reaction would be.
I think it was a combination of things. Holloway had been kind of a douche to David numerous times. In addition to this, David had already developed a contempt for humans (he displays this all throughout the film, if subtly sometimes) and he seems to have an interest inlearning about the creatures on the planet.
It's also important to note that David was a very early model android compared to the ones in the other Alien films. As Bishop says, even the model depicted in Alien (Ash) was a twitchy one. Later models have behavioral inhibitors to prevent them from killing sprees, but David is an old model that feels artificial emotion. This is what causes his contempt for his creators and ultimately leads to him being at fault for getting so many of them killed.
The whole Weyland thing was unneccessary really. All it really serves to do was fnally eliminate AVP from the canon.
The Nostromo was an old, battered tugboat where costs were cut. Worth 42 billion in adjusted dollars if I remember correctly. The Prometheus was a state of the art purpose built ship bult especially for this mission. I believe Vickers says the expedition cost a trllion dollars?
Weyland ordered David to infect Holloway's drink and it helped him as Holloway showed a bit of amiosity towards David throughout the film. He wanted to see what the effects would be as Weyland himself wanted the keys to immortality.

Saw the film today.......some wonderful moments but as a complete film, it fails considerably. The utter lack of severe tension, some appalling dialogue along the lines of 'this is what's happening kids'.....the Captain's conclusion that it's a military installation comes out of nowhere, without any evidence or experience to suggest this.
There is no uniformity to the processes involved with the 'black goo' , as contact with it produces a range of different effects ~ so it disintegrates the ingesting being as a military resource, but in the hands of the Engineers it becomes a vehicle to create life.....it may also have mutated the worms into that being that breaks that guy's arm & then dives down his throat (??) but then we have the blood of that generated worm act like an acid, but turn a man into a super-human lunatic....but then it can infect a being and bond with his DNA whilst he stays disintegration free long enough to create a further life form when hours later he has sex......this is a fucking B-movie! The creature that then grows from this hybrid resembled the final form of William Birkin and looked like something out of a bad 1980s Amityville sequel.
I would love some answers from a mind sharper than mine....why was there a design of a xenomorph in the temple if the generations to create one had not yet existed (black-goo infected human + sex with another human > giant tentacle final form Birkin thing + Engineer = early form xenomorph) ? Were those aqua-snake things that broke the guys arm and ingested by him already there on the planet before the engineers arrived with their urns, or was that a latter creation ? and why did the escaping 2 females not just side-step the falling Engineer ship to the left or right ?!
Jessica... Lisa... Forgive me. May god justify my death in exchange for your safety. With my last breathe, I will pray that you both are safe. Farewell.….George Trevor

I think Prometheus will be better accepted once the second one comes out. Ridley has said he has two more stories to tell before they arrive at the beginning of Alien so if he keeps that promise and delivers a solid trilogy that will end with the ship on LV-426 then I'll be happy with that.
We've had the mystery for over 30 years now. Time for some answers!
However, given his age and work schedule I cannot really see that coming into fruition.

Saw it last week. The opening cinematics was awesome (it reminded me so much of Mass Effect, as did a few other things in the story) so I prepped myself up for a great movie despite what I've seen some people say on Tumblr. And I think it started out really good. There were a few things though...
David. I was really confused with his... personality. He seemed very curious and fascinated with humans at the beginning of the movie and then he goes around and effs them up later on. But I've TheBatman to thank for clarifying that it was actually Weyland who ordered him to do it. I don't remember it being explicitly stated in the movie, or even implied. Until now, I've always had the impression that he did it out of his own accord.
Next is Weyland. Thought the whole thing was unncessary as well.
Then the thing from the black goo. If I understand correctly, it's supposed to be a bioweapon of sorts, and has the form of a... squid when given birth to. If it gets into contact with an engineer and impregnates it, the result is the Alien. But the result for Holloway who ingested the goo was different. And the ship is loaded with hundreds and thousands of vessels containing that substance, and they were planning to drop it onto Earth. Is that about right? Would it be correct to assume that the ship encountered some kind of outbreak hence the recording of engineers running around and dying in heaps? But if that's the case how come none of them got impregnated by the... err, worms?
And what's with the severed engineer head gaining coming back to life if it's been dead for quite a while? (Didn't catch the carbon date.)
"I'd like to do more, I really would. But carrying everyone out is not an option."
I watched the low-quality version, so I missed a lot. I like the fact Ridley gave a big "fuck you" to Paul Anderson. Also, the elephant-mask was ingenious. I remember from the comic books those creatures were organic, but since you only discover what appears to be bones in the first Alien movie, it fits well.
I didn't understand if humans were bio-weapons or vessels created for that black substance... And did anyone catch what David said to the humanoid at the end to make it attack Peter?
Overall, they didn't need an Alien to make it an Alien movie. Well done.
AVP is the equivalent of Operation Raccoon City. Do you think Capcom will consider Slant 6's storyline for future games?
Well Fox did with AVP R, but thankfully that's all history now.
According to the linguistics consultant who worked on the film and who also played the linguist hologram for David at the start of the film he says;
'This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life.'
Rumour has it in the director's cut he has a bigger conversation with the Engineer before it rips his head off.
"Go ahead, tell him what you want. If he fires me I'll thank him for it."
Thanks. Anyone read the original Alien novel? I'll check my copy when I get back. I think it was based on the uncut scenario.
I have read it. Some good stuff. It is not based on the original script where they find the pyramid and the derelict on Acheron, although interestingly on the ship Dallas appears to find an empty 'urn' not unlike those found in Prometheus. It happens right before they find the Engineer in the chair and before they lower Kane down to the egg chamber.
"Go ahead, tell him what you want. If he fires me I'll thank him for it."
Amazing, ^^ my mind is blown at that - is there a link where I can read that? It sounds absolute fascinating.
EDIT: Found it - really fascinating that some of the ideas clearly have emerged from this script:
INTERIOR - CONTROL ROOM OF ALIEN SHIP
This chamber is totally dark as Broussard arrives at the top of the
hole.
Standard stands with his flashlight/camera ("datastick") tracing a
beam through the hanging dust.
Broussard unclips himself from the climbing wire, then raises his own
light. At that moment, Melkonis arrives at the top of the hole.
THEIR LIGHTS SCAN THE ROOM. The beams are clearly visible as columns
of light in the floating dust. They reveal heavy, odd shapes.
Broussard stumbles over something. He shines his light down on it.
It is a large, glossy urn, brown in color, with peculiar markings.
Broussard stands it upright. It has a round opening in the top, and is
empty.
Suddenly, Melkonis lets out a grunt of shock. Their lights have
illuminated something unspeakably grotesque: A HUGE ALIEN SKELETON,
SEATED IN THE CONTROL CHAIR.
They approach the skeleton, their lights trained on it. IT IS A
GROTESQUE THING, BEARING NO RESEMBLANCE TO THE HUMAN FORM.

I really loved the film. As for the general questions that people have, I have a few ideas myself.
One thing I don't understand is why people assume that the black goo oozing from the containers is the same substance that the Engineer drinks at the beginning. To my knowledge, there really isn'y anything moviewise that would suggest that.
I don't think Holloway's reaction to the goo was too different from Fifield's. They both had similiar facial lacerations which perhaps doesn't mean anything, but the method of ingestion was very different for each of them. Holloway ingested one drop mixed with an alcoholic drink, while Fifield fell face-first into a puddle of it. I think that if given enough time Holloway's reaction would've been more similar to Fifield's. After all, Fifield and that other guy spent an entire night in the pyramid waiting out the storm. Holloway's duration of infection was shorter.
And, just for the heck of it I'm gonna throw this is in... Am I the only one who thought that Fifield's movements when he attacked the crew were a bit ape-like? Or am I crazy?
I'm glad someone else brought up the design of the zenomorph in the temple. Almost every other forum has overlooked this. To me that was the biggest mystery, that weird temple-like room.
"God is in his Heaven. All is right with the world."
Yeah the biggest and best speculation and mystery I am having with folks is the appearence of the Xeno in the 'tomb'. Almost like they see it as a deity.
