Rockfort Island was a private island owned by the Umbrella Corporation located in the Southern Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile in the Roggeveen Basin. Officially, the island operated as a paramilitary training facility and prison complex. It served as the private island of the Ashford family, co-founders of Umbrella.
History
Initially home to a small indigenous group of people, the island was subject to a hostile takeover by Umbrella. The locals were primarily executed, with a few being forced to join Umbrella itself.
The island doubled as multiple complexes. A prison section on the island was used to detain prisoners of Umbrella from overseas for offences against the company. A set of labs was maintained for viral agent and B.O.W. experimentation, and the island housed the Military Training Facility, where all members of the company's Special Forces teams such as the Umbrella Security Service were trained. The island also had its own set of B.O.W. programs running, and was responsible for such products as the Albinoid and Bandersnatch. Most important of all, the island was run by the Ashford family and doubled as their living space. Both Alfred and Alexia Ashford lived in a mansion on top of one of the island's mountains, fronted by a palace in between it and connected by a bridge. Alfred himself became the administrator of the island in 1993 after graduating from a university in England. An airport containing several modified C-130 transport planes was also present on the island.
Claire Redfield was transported to the island's prison on December 27th 1998 and in a twist of fate, the island was subsequently attacked by the Hive/Host Capture Force. Also included in the attack was a leak of an experimental T-virus variant from storage, which doomed the island to its destruction. The facility's self-destruct sequence was set off by Alfred Ashford following a battle with Claire and a former prisoner, Steve Burnside. The resulting set of explosions damaged a large majority of the island's facilities, but did not destroy the island outright.
Complexes
Military Training Facility
Completed in December 1993 under the orders of Alfred Ashford, the training facility on Rockfort Island was built alongside the island's prison complex. Its purpose was to train members of Umbrella's special forces such as the Umbrella Security Service and Anti B.O.W. Squad members.
Prison
Also constructed in 1993, potential industrial saboteurs and traitors to Umbrella were captured and sent here to be used as human guinea pigs in biological experiments. Once inside, they were held indefinitely.
Palace
The grandiose palace of the island where Alfred ran his operations.
Mansion
The personal living space of Alfred and Alexia Ashford on one of the island's mountains, located behind the Palace through a secret passage and bridge. Comprised of a dining room on the 1st floor and the twin's living quarters on the 2nd floor.
Airport
The island's airport, built within a deep cave within the island, was used for the transport of materials and personnel, with several modified C-130 transport planes for use.
Laboratories
Two notable laboratories were constructed within the Military Training Facility. One was built underground and was used for experiments with viral agents and other chemicals, with a nearby B.O.W. Storage Room. Another was found on the 2nd floor of the facility, and was used for the development of the Albinoid and Bandersnatch B.O.W.s.
