Rani is the niece of an activist from the Terrasave pressure group who became embroiled in the Harvardville Incident in 2005.
Whilst waiting for fellow activist, Claire Redfield Rani's aunt went to pick up the limousine. During this time, the airport became quickly overran with the undead. She was saved by Claire, who helped guide Rani out of the airport and back to her aunt who was waiting outside.
