"Black Widow" is a spider-based B.O.W. developed by the Umbrella Corporation based on data retrieved from Raccoon City. 1 2 3 4
History
The 'Black Widow' was specifically developed using data collected on the countless Giant Spider subjects created during the Raccoon City incident, and is a direct continuation of early research conducted on arachnids at the Arklay Laboratory which produced the Web Spinner B.O.W. They were developed and trained as B.O.W.s, and were intended to be dispatched to Umbrella branch facilities throughout the world. Several specimens were kept in the Umbrella Antarctic Base for storage and transportation purposes.
Several specimens were sent to Rockfort Island for combat training of the Umbrella Security Service and combat data collection on the B.O.W. itself. On December 27, 1998, a number of subjects escaped following the attack by H.C.F. When the Antarctic Base was frozen, one Black Widow specimen exhibited an abnormal mutation and grew to enormous size. It is known simply as "Giant Black Widow".
Attributes
The Black Widow is extremely poisonous and improves upon its notorious reputation with an increased size and more potent venom, as well as incredible vitality superior to the Giant Spider and Web Spinner specimens. One of the noticeable side effects is its change of colour, from the more traditional black and red colours to green and purple.
One trait exhibited by the Black Widow is that it does not die if its abdomen is destroyed, and can still move around lightly in combat. Physically, its main characteristic apart from the colour change is the complete lack of hair on its body, making it very easy to tell apart from more traditional spider-based B.O.W.s.
